Title: Backfiring...???
Post by b-p-stewart on 06/04/10 at 10:05:48

I have had my 1997 Savage for about 3 weeks now. It is backfiring alot and I would like to know how to fix the problem. I have cleaned the carb out, and it did not help the problem. Can someone please help me. Thanks!

How and when doe it backfire?

On shut down... turn the idle mixture screw about 1/8 turn CCW richer until it goes from a kerpow to a poof.  Don't make it too rich.

On gear shift... tighten header bolts and look for air leaks in the intake and exhaust.  WD40 for the intake and a lit candle for the exhaust.  Don't reverse the two   :o

Also, cleaning and/or adjusting the spring on the air shutoff valve may work too.

you know, i've lurked on this site for a long time, and i think that is the most simple, best explanation in short i've ever heard.

b-p-stewart, if those don't work, i suggest using the search function on the site for "backfire" or "afterfire" and set the time limit for a few months and you'll see dozens of posts about it, but they all pretty much boil down to what verslagen said.

check yer carb for proper tuning, check yer exhaust for leaks, ride on.

if you need advice about getting to the idle mixture screw, just search for that the same way. to sum up, there is a brass plug on the right side of the carb you (carefully) drill out and remove to get to a small brass screw that adjusts the idle mixture on the carb.

It squirts gas out the back

The bike backfires when it is idling or riding it. I will rev on it and when I let the throttle go that is when it backfires. Not everytime, but more than like. It is kinda annoying and makes the bike sound bad. I will try to adjust the screw. I just check the exhaust and I have also wrapped it is exhaust wrap, so it shouldn't have an exhaust leak. Thanks for the suggestions, I will try it out!

Haven't noticed that.

I asked because I turned it out an extra 1/4 turn and the only effect I noticed was a louder wump at shut down.

I only have one data point, so it may be nothing.

So now you know what that wump is... a large pool of gas being lit with fresh air as you shut down.

AH-HA!

So the afterfire at shutdown can be cause by too rich and too lean.

I'm pretty sure I've got a leak somewhere (intake and/or exhaust), so that's probably not helping.

Do the candle and WD40 tests need to be performed with a warm engine?
