Title: Drilled a hole in my Carb!!! How canI repair???
Post by MrMike911 on 06/01/10 at 09:39:14

Hey guys, new to the forum But I need your help!! Trying to fix the backfire problem in my wife's 06 Savage. I got a little confused on where the brass plug that covered the "Air Mixture" screw and I drilled a hole right thru the brass plug just behind the float needle valve. Now I have a 3/8 hole betwe :oen the venturi and an area that is normally covered by the gasket. I need some help. Can I fill this hole with solder or "JB Weld"??? Has any one else performed this Bone Head move?  :o Nice to know there is a forum like this to help with this bike. Thanks in advance.

We have had several folks break thru and mess up the screw head underneath the copper plug, but no, you are the very first one to through drill a 3/8' hole all the way through the side of his carburetor.

Go on Ebay and start looking for a new carburetor ...

You might also contact Lancer (he has replaced upgrade carbs for several members so he might know who may have an unused carb) and you might also post on the Marketplace list that you need a good used stock carb.

Thanks for your reply. But I didn't drill through the adjustment screw, I actually drilled thru a solid copper plug. Can that hole be filled with something??? Solder?? Glue?? JB Weld???

I drilled a hole in my carb too, that was to open up the main air jet gallery to allow bigger jets. Lancer does a performance carb at a good price.

Nothing to loose at this point,... I'd try to tap a screw into the hole and use a rubber washer to seal it tight... (a steel screw should cut it's own way through the aluminum body if it's close in size)...
...if it don't work,.. try JB weld,...
...if that don't work,.. you might have to hunt down a used carb...
;)...

Yes, I was think JB Weld might do the trick. If it will hold up to the solvents of gasoline, then I should be ok. Thanks for your help. [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

ive used jb wield on carbs before it will last about a year or so. You just have to make sure you use brake cleaner on the part your putting the jb wield on or it wont stick. Hope this helps

get a "fine thread" tap for your new 3/8" hole and a short "fine thread" screw to match; tap the hole, coat the screw threads with really good epoxy and screw it in nice and tight.
should work just fine and last a looooooooooooooong time.

I have a 3/8 hole betwe en the venturi and an area that is normally covered by the gasket

Forgot to ask...did you compromise the gasket surface or is the hole surrounded by good metal ?

Just a point of info; the "tech section" is for HOW TO  procedures, as in explaining to the rest of the forum how to complete a specific task.
A Maintenance Manual.
Questions about how to do or fix something should go in the "Rubber side down section with all other LS650 related topics.

There's threads at the top of each forum area titled "Posting Guidelines".  They'll tell you what's appropriate for each area.  Hope you find an easy way to fix the carb! ;)

I like Lancers idea. I just installed my Raptor petcock yesterday and remembered reading about how someone had used a screw to seal the vac port on the carb.
Dug around for about 15 minutes and found a small screw that just threaded right in (almost like ait was made for it!). Didn't seal it with anything but rode it in today and it seems to work just dandy!

Another way to skin that cat:

I squeezed a bit of RTV into the hose first.
