Title: Rattle inside left engine case
Post by Baldeagle on 05/31/10 at 19:20:37

I have a rattle inside the left engine case and need any ideas what it might be.  Looks like I will be pulling it and would need to know what to look for.  Thanks.

You sure its in the left side? Right side would indicated a cam chain issue, not sure about left side.

Not being a smart-ass here, but did you pull the front pulley cover and check for a rock banging around in there? Can sound just like a loose stator...

The belt on these things will pick up all kinds of junk from the road.

Rattles while at idle so that rules out trash or rock but will pull ti anway to check.  Took care of cam chain tensioner.  Sound is coming from somewhere(?) on the left side.(Sitting on cycle) and does seem to come from inside the cover.  And you are not a smart ass!  You don't have an idea of how little I know about cycles and wheel barrows.

I have known the bolt at the center of the crankshaft to be loose.
This can be checked by opening the inspection hole at the center of the left case.  If this is the case, it can be re-torqued by putting in 5th gear and having a friend hold the foot brake tightly while tightening.
I forgot the torque spec but it is a lot.
Oh and put a drop of loctite on the threads first.

I'd check for known rattles 1st before I went in.
Them noises can be deceiving.

After molding a clay cycle and sticking pins and saying some voo-doo, a friend who probably knows said it probably is to much play in the exhaust valve rocker arm.  will let you know.

Did you find out what the rattle was ? I have a engine rattle too when I brake and let off the clutch a little. I have checked everything i can think of. It does it on takeoff and when going through gears until rpm increases. well hope you find your problem , and let us know what you find. thanks

No answer yet............Have been traveling and haven't done anything yet.  Will be taking grandkids back home to Indianapolis this coming week and hope to address this problem in a couple of weeks.

BaldEagale,
What year bike???

'86 or '87 ?   If so, you need to rip the side cover off before running any it more.  Those years had the un-improved starter intermediate gear.   Hoping you don't have those years.......

If a newer bike, then you might want to get a large screwdriver and use it sort of like a stethoscope.  Metal part on the engine, handle part to your ear.  Then move it around until you find where the noise is the loudest.

Bald and Larry, if it's low on the left engine crankcase area, it's very likely that the front sprocket nut has become loose and is rattling around there.  But the only way it comes loose is if "someone" didn't tab the nut with the locking washer (ie, bend up one edge of the washer).  It will vibrate mostly when the bike is decelerating while in gear, but can become loose enough to vibrate on acceleration and even at idle.

serenity 3743, I checked the flywheel nut on the left side, its ok . Tmack1-fso, i thought about the starter gear assembly. Mine is a 2001, could it be makeing the noise ? It knocks ( rattles ) when i blip the throttle or on takeoff if i dont let off the clutch real easy. I can brake the bike and hear it good, even over the supertrapp open exaust.
