Title: Anyone have an old torn up cylinder head?
Post by Truckinduc on 05/30/10 at 11:15:27

Im looking to find an old head that may have been torn up due to something like low oil pressure.

Im going to conduct an experiment like Oldfeller does. May lead to some increased HP, hopefully.

Thanks everyone.

HOW MANY DO YOU NEED ?

Ok, I'll bite.

Other than larger valves and porting, what can you do to a head to increase HP?

Shave it?  Weld it up to reduce empty space?

Well hopefully Ill only need one, hopefully.

Here is the idea.

The intake port design is not that bad. A little smoothing and its good.

The exhaust port is another story.  What I want to do is weld up the "rocker Box" that interrupts the exhaust port.

I say "rocker box" for lack or a better term.

Ill then remove as much material As I can in order to smooth the port.

Id Like to do this on a junked head first to see if I grind into any passageways or anything else that could destroy a good head.

Then if all that goes well Ill start to think about larger valves and a cam.

I dont see much use in increasing flow around the valves when the port design is a big limiting factor.

So Lancer, wanna work something out?

I got a head w/o a cover when I bought a bottom end.
only damage is from a nut or washer that was dropped in and left.

The rocker box that you are referring to contains the exhaust valve springs and seats.  There is a little excess room that could be welded up and removed, especially from the lower corner radius of the square box, but the circle form of the valve springs & seats would have to remain where it is.   A fully smoothed flow might make some thin spots at the valve seat locations ....

In short, you likely can't get it all out of the way.

You would gain some flow by doing this, but it would not be as large as the gain from removing and blending the main exhaust exit restriction "washer form" that is also cast into the housing which is the standard porting mod everybody does.

Good luck with the weld up effort, it is certainly doable and will give a little boost to the very top end of a fully modified motor.

I agree with OF, not much room at all to weld from the top and remove from the ex. port underneath.
But, it does not hurt to play with it and try.

Did you have something in mind ?

Oh, and just so there is no misunderstanding, I just have the 2 naked  heads...no head cover or valve gear.

They were really banged up from valves letting go and crashing around the cylinder/piston/head.  I cleaned them up a little but for what you want to do one or both of them would be great.

I have removed all of the material from the "washer" in the port.

The point of this experiment is to see how far I can go. And If I go too far no big deal, Ill know the limit.

how much do you want lancer?
