Title: oil level
Post by rl153 on 05/26/10 at 11:14:48

My oil level is almost to the top line after ,about an 1/8 inch below, after running the bike from cold for 3 minutes ,then letting it rest for 3 minutes ,standing straight up. I guess it's supposed to be 1/2 way between the two marks ideally . Do you think this is too much oil ,or is there some leeway? Thanks

fill it as high as you dare. Too much oil isnt a big problem (to an extent) since our bikes run oil at low psi. Old Feller routinely fills his until he can see a wee bit of oil at the bottom with the bike on the kickstand. I routinely fill mine so the window is totally full with the bike upright as the manual says. If you want to stay within the fill lines fill it to the top line. I suggest always filling high and keep checking it every day. You might have a leak you're not fully aware of or you might burn more than you'd expect.

You have too much oil when it starts blowin' out the breather.
Till then... no worries.
For me, this is the top line.

As long as you can see oil in the window, but not up past the window... you're in the park...
a little high from middle gives you a safe margin,... in case you get the urge to try for the ton (100mph)...... ;)...

The book tells you to check it after warming it up ,but sometimes I check it when its cold ,wheres your level when its cold ,standing straight up? Thanks

It is all moot -- put your bike stone upright (get somebody to hold it for you) and then crank it up and watch your oil level instantly fall WAY below the window level.

That is your real running oil level.

;D

Oil

Make sure you have some

I was just riding my bike for an hour . After I stopped for 2 minutes the oil level with the engine hot was filled to the top line of the oil level lines .It seems like my valves are making noise and I get the feeling like I don't have enough oil in there ,but I don't know if I should run more .I don't want to blow any seals .The bike only has 3k mi on it .I don't know .

I aways fill mine to top line when cold on all by Suzuki's I've had with no problem. They have to give some free play are people would be wrecking motors all the time.

Did my oil change 2 weeks ago and filled it up to the top line took 2 1/4 quarts with a new filter too (only change that every other time).

Amazing how she feels with new oil vs. 4k mile oil.
Next time I'm ignoring the  manual and changing around 3k-3.5k

I'll just say,
these bikes are not critical to a little overfilling.
When I bought mine, oil was on the low line while on the stand.
As a standard, I keep oil level on the low line, w/ a 2x4 under the stand.

Just checked the oil in the Gulf. Looks to be a bit over full. Where are we gonna drain it?
