Title: petcock
Post by Bubba on 05/25/10 at 12:00:39

Could someone let me know what is the purpose of a vacuum activated petcock?
Why wouldn't I want to replace it with a Raptor?
I'm suspecting mine but haven't figured out the how/why of using a vacuum to pull the fuel.
Any thoughts?
Thanks

Well,... it theoretically prevents the possibility of flooding fuel into your crankcase...
Problem is,.. when it fails,...  it floods fuel into your crankcase... :-?...

How's that for stupid?...
Get a Raptor... ;)...

+1. Only benefit it seems to give is you dont have to remember to turn the fuel off. Its expensive, when it fails it does so with a vengence, and its often a murky problem to diagnose.

Looks like Raptor here I come!
I remember reading on here somewhere that it can also be cold sensitive also...seems like whenever it drops to around 45 or below my bike runs like dog doo unless I crank the idle way up and set it on PRI.
So is it a given that you'll get fuel in the crankcase if you forget to shut it off?
Thanks guys

Not at all,...  it will only happen if the float sticks at the same time...
I've never had it happen in over 25 years of riding, and I never shut mine off unless I'm pullin' the tank...

Mine is on PRI ever since.. well, since it failed! I'm happy.

It has two ways to fail,..
one is failure to suck.. switching to prime fixes that...
two is sucking fuel,...  switching to prime adds more fuel to the fire...

:-?...
