I wonder if a "tire war" can be as vituperative as an "oil war?"

I like a Dunlop K-555 140/80 x 15 for the rear and a compatable one for the front. It is made for the Honda PC800 which is a heavier bike and they last me as long as any I have had. Max

I have 7000 miles on the Metzler tire that I put on the back, still plenty of tread left. The Metzler's really grip the road in all weather conditions and have great tread life.

Yep, that what I just put on about 900 miles ago, and handles much better than stock, good in wet weather, sticks to the road, cornering is better too.
went for 180 mile ride after a 100 mile break-in on the back roads and what a difference.

+1
My history.  (I weigh about 230.  Bike is a "bagger" (weighs more than stock.  NO, I don't know exactly how much!))

20,000 miles on a rear
25,000 miles on a front
19,000 miles on a rear

If a Perelli can match that mileage, I MIGHT give those a try next time around.

I want to try the Metzler's when I replace mine.

But I think you can see that there are many opinions about tires, so you'll have to decide for yourself and go with your gut (and wallet!)

My preference is Dunlop 404, both front and rear. This could become a real quagmire.

Nun-uh --- mebbie not ever, especially not until they figure out whatever yardsticks they are going to use to compare their various tires with.

Mileage is relatively objective, clear cut and such it makes easy "real world" comparisons.

(ignoring riding style, of course)

Cornering handling and such is completely subjective and will get them all tied up in knots unless they define good handling a wee bit "for discussion purposes".

And they haven't quantified a cost or value variable at all (tire cost per mile gets used a lot)

===================

So far it is a very nice genteel discussion that isn't very far along into any specifics.

But they are doing jest fine so far, so let them run with it a bit and see where it goes.

Many of these discussions just are just brand preference discussions with no technical points discussed at all, so this might just be one of those.

Besides, why does everything have to be hard?  Why can't you have a nice quiet motorcycle tire brand discussion?

I like Perelli and I like Dunlop jest fine as the "start" price isn't as painful as Metzler.

You got some wear out data given above on Metzlers, 20,000 miles into $120 = 0.6 cents per mile which likely pretty much covers your highest mileage bike tires.   Most Savage folks don't get 20,000 miles out of a rear Metzler anyway.

Given that most non-IRC tires all handle jest dandy when put on a Savage, I wonder which common brand yields the lowest cost per mile?

Let's get some more ME880 rear tire total mileage numbers from various folks to see what sort of range we come up with.

If you ride daily, thicker tread makes sense.
If it sits a lot the dry rot will get you.
.....

Here is the thread I started when I was looking to replace old stock tires, has great feedback from members

Yep, certainly is a good "I like it" thread.    No specifics on mileage or anything else mentioned anywhere.

=========

Metzler ME880 seems to be nice, but Toymaker for example wore one out inside 2-3 years seems like .... maybe he'll mention a mileage for us.

Who else has a total mileage wear out figure for an ME880?

I know ME880's get used here on the list (and they get replaced too).

for me the price and mileage of a tire is second to the grip it provides in a verity of weather situations.

the metzeler seams to be a harder higher mileage tyre, so it stands to reason that the trade off for those miles is less grip.

jabman.
The Metzeler is a VERY good tire for handling, gripping the road, wet surfaces, whatever you want to call it.  I do mostly back roads, lots of twisties, hills, water crossings, riding in the rain, some dirt/gravel.  Almost never on the freeway.  And, I get good mileage.
The draw back.. expensive!  That's the trade off with Metzeler.

One of the problems with getting an objective view of "tire A handles better than tire B" is that when you put on a NEW tire, it may handle better than the OLD tire, simply because it is new.

My opinion comes from running Dunlop 404's (expired around 10k miles), then put on my first set of Metzelers.  Those really grabbed the road!!
HOWEVER, when I put on a replacement Metzeler in the front, it was not much of a change from the old tire.  Probably because I was use to the way they handled.

OF, I wore my rear Metzelers out inside a year (I would have to check my maint log to be sure how long it actually was).  I ride a lot.

Title: Re: BEST TIRE
Post by jabman on 05/26/10 at 13:20:29

yes im sure the metzeler does grip ok, the main problem with grip seams to lie with the cheap Chinese tyres that i have used on previous bikes in the past until I got them changed, they are rock solid and literately always look 'new', i swapped them for a set of metzeler me33 if if remember right, which were very soft and wore alot by the time i sold the bike on. But have so much grip I could virtually lay the bike down in the corners. Like I can easily scrape pegs with my mt66's in the wet.

My bike came with bridgestone exedra tyres   the rear was worn flat out in the middle due to highway use so it cornered terribly, so i carnt really comment on that tyre.  :)

We will get more miles out of a tire that some one using the exact same tire on a heavier bike. The weight of the bike and how a person rides effects tire wear. The shop that I get my tires from told me that I should get about 14000-15000 miles out of a Metzler rear tire on the Savage/S40. I am halfway there so we will see. I like to push a little hard in the curves. I had Pirelli tires on my Suzuki Burgman and got 10000 miles out of both front and back tires. I switched to Metzler Feel Free tires when I replaced them. The scoot handles better with the Metzler tires (to me).

"OF...16K on the Metz, 1.something years" sez Toymaker

Metzler tires have very strong mileage recommendations

(average of 18,300 miles on the back of a Savage so far)

This is far superior to most tires, most crap out around 9,000 miles.

At the best prices mentioned,  a Metz yields 0.65 cents a mile which is superior value for a bike tire.

WARNING

<stop reading now -- everything else is pure evil and will rot your eyes out>

Comparing it to a darksider tire though tells a different story, the darksider will last even longer and will cost 1/2 as much as the Metzler.  In my case, my darksider tire cost 1/4 as much as a Metz and looks like it will outlast the Metzler by around 4-6 thousand miles.  This yields a cost per mile of 0.14 cents per mile which is significantly less than the very best bike tire.  Grip, handling and braking and all are good to me, but not your cup of tea I am sure.

Go to the sink and wash the evil out of your eyes before any permanent damage is done to your oculars.

I told you not to read it !!

There are more pics of my bike on the site than any other scooter,  by a factor of 10 at least.

However, there are NO PICTURES OF ME, period, end of story --- anywhere ....   I instantly break the lenses of all cameras that try.

Even my own dog is completely agast at having to look me straight in the mug.

7000 miles on a Dunlop 404 with lots of tread left driving aggressive, hanging off and grounding pegs.  Little bigger size  ( 140/90/15  $78 at AMT tires). Looks great. Fills rear fender better.  ;D

I'm replacing my Dunlop D404 rear tire next week. It has aprox. 12,000 miles on it. It's really bald right now. Thats why I haven't been riding much lately. Last year a the Tail of the Dragon, Oldfeller commented that my tire was kinda worn and that was a year ago, so i guess I was due a couple thousand miles ago. I'm replacing it with another D404.

AL

Post by Oldfeller on 05/28/10 at 19:34:01

Naw Al, that was the front tires on your truck I was talking about since I had scrubbed about half the thread off of them chasing after all you mad Savagers all over them mountains for three days ....

;D

Let's see, $78 divided by 12,000 miles gives you 0.65 cents a mile, about the same value as a Metzler.

(not as nice as 0.14 cents a mile though)

Now Al -- you know that I know that you know better.

Jest like Toymaker last year before you, ol' Freddie is gonna have to hum a few bars for you if you go put on another motorcycle tire ....

Last year about this time Toymaker lumped it and put on the $120 Metzler that he is replacing this year with his new Darksider tire.  Mind you he put 16,000 miles on it in a year's time, still $120 a year for a rear tire is a lot of money.

Instead, this time he is paying less than $80 for five + years worth of not having to mess with it any at all .....

(motorcycle style rear tires cost more of your time, effort and aggravation as well as lots of your hard earned money)

;D   ;D   ;D   ;D

Plus Al will have his brand new tire lined up there with the rest of us on the Dragon overlook and he will know deep in his heart that my old raggedy half worn out Chung Fooie VW tire will still be there on the back of my bike when his nice new tire is dust (and the one that comes after it too, most likely).

And to rub a little salt in it, we will all let him ride around some on our darksider bikes so he KNOWS they don't handle ill or funny and they grip as good or better than his brand new Dunlop.
