Title: VW Air Cleaner Mod (Requested by Klem!) Post by crash_tx on 05/23/10 at 09:25:42 Hi guys, been getting a lot of questions about the air cleaners on my rigid... It's simply a "T" made out of 2" exhaust tubing from the local auto parts store. Cut slits in the FLARED end of the tubing and use this section to slide over the carb. Secure with a SS hose clamp. Then use the rest of the tubing to fabricate the straight section of the "T" as shown in the top photo. The air cleaners are 5-1/2" chrome VW Bug or Ghia air cleaners purchased from this nice chap on Ebay for only $9.95 ea! Search Ebay for: VW BU BUGGY TRIKE RAIL GHIA Stock CHROME AIR CLEANER I then used 1/4" all thread to hold the two air cleaners together and against the straight section of the "T". I'm interested to see if anyone can do this with the stock Savage??? :-? http://www.voodoovintage.biz/CL/air_cleaner_01.jpg http://www.voodoovintage.biz/CL/air_cleaner_02.jpg http://www.voodoovintage.biz/CL/air_cleaner_03.jpg http://www.voodoovintage.biz/CL/air_cleaner_04.jpg http://www.voodoovintage.biz/CL/air_cleaner_05.jpg |
Title: Re: VW Air Cleaner Mod (Requested by Klem!) Post by verslagen1 on 05/23/10 at 09:52:41 You'll get better performance with a longer lead in to the carb, more of a length like the stock rubber inlet tube. I'll give it a try ;D Also would like a smoother transition "T" more of a "Y" Thanks for the info ;D |

Title: Re: VW Air Cleaner Mod (Requested by Klem!) Post by Gort on 05/24/10 at 13:08:08 You can buy the foam element air cleaner cheaper, here, for $8.95. Or buy the better filtering one for $13.95, which has a cotton gauze re-usable element similar to K&N filters. You oil the filter with a washable oil like K&N sells, and then when the filter gets dirty you wash everything out and re-oil. http://www.wolfgangint.com/Parts/Round+Air+Cleaners/Type+1/ |

Title: Re: VW Air Cleaner Mod (Requested by Klem!) Post by justin_o_guy2 on 05/25/10 at 12:30:10 An intake w/ sufficient volume between the filter & carb to load the cylinder w/ an intake pulse is better, but thats nice looking. |
