Title: front wheel screeching noise
Post by russian on 05/23/10 at 08:34:15

hello everyone!
all of a sudden the front wheel of my 2007 boulevard s40 is making  horrible screeching noise once I go over 30 mph, below that speed things appear to be normal, but over 30 it sounds like metal on metal and faster I go  the louder is the noise, it scared me witless. also, when I try to brake on high speed it gets a bit shaky and wobbles, not so on speeds below 30. the front tire was changed about  month ago in a bike shop and I changed front brake pads two weeks ago. the problem started just the other day. could it be because of the new brake pads or there is something else?
I'll greatly appreciate your response!

check the bearings
lift front wheel off ground
check that it rolls smooth
check for side play

while you're at it, check the pads
you should be able to see a groove in the pad next to the disk

Well, tighten your spokes then
either the spokes will pop or they'll eat thru the hub.

If the bearings look good, check your brake rotor and see if there are any patches of wear on it. Sounds like it could be a warped rotor with the shaking while braking at high speeds. See that alot in cages when the rotors get overheated from people riding the brake. They get warped enough they will wobble and hit the pads when you reach higher speeds, it will sound just like bad bearings.
Had the same problem on my 87 when I first got it.

its a tedious PITA to get it right. Ive watched Ineclipse true the wheels on his bicycle and that was big reason I switched to cast wheels.
