Title: Is she in time?!?!?!?
Post by PipJones on 05/22/10 at 07:01:57

I've been jacking with my beast for about a month now (actually its been in the past 2 days for about 4hr total) and she finally decided to start to run.

Can these things be 1 tooth off on the camshaft sprocket and still run, just without the proper throttle response??? She will sit and idle, but if you rap her up she doesn't respond to it well. she stays running, but she just doesn't sound right...

Anyone with experiance w/ being 1 tooth off?

one tooth off, and she might run, but probably wouldn't idle...
opposite of your problem...
test your petcock...(info in the tech section)...
not many spark issues with this bike, so I'm guessin' fuel...

i've been using a bottle with fuel in it so i didn't have to put the fuel tank on. She is currently VERY bare, without any gaskets, etc. in case i needed to take her back apart. I think I may gasket her up, fill her with oil and put the tank back on.

I am also considering moving her 1 more tooth, just to see since i'm there and see how she does.... if she runs better, we're in time but if she doesn't want to pop-off, i'll take her 1 tooth back and bolt her together.............

I am not having fun btw......

also, she DID have oil in her, she was just leaking w/o the gaskets

so,.. did you have the cam chain off?....

also,... feeding the carb with a bottle,... you do have the vac line plugged, right?..

PS,...  I know it's no fun,... just tryin' to help  ;)....

yeah i replaced the cam chain and chain tensioner guide. i had a really loud SCREACHING sound coming from the right side just above idle, so i looked at my tensioner and got like 19mm or something rediculous. after replacing the timing components i'm at like 7.5 or 8mm. MUCH BETTER! but i guess i spun the cam or crank w/o realizing it and have been jacking with it TOOTH-BY-TOOTH since then. I've moved it 5 teeth (in the same direction) and finally got some good compression. BUT i don't know if its good enough.....

No i did't have the vac plugged up. and there was no other hole in the bottle, so it would be creating vacuum inside which WOULD hinder fuel flow........

any more ideas?

also, she's torn back apart with the clutch case apart and the head cover of again. sooooo i can't just plug the vac line and poke a hole in the bottle and try again.

there's been a few that have mistimed it.
ran but wouldn't go over 50

happened a year or 2 ago

I wouldn't guess where the timing should be, set it to the marks
sooner or later you're gonna start smackin' parts.

Is it possible you gotta a hanging valve?

Did you check the oil drive gear is properly meshed?

My concern wasn't for venting on the fuel bottle,... but if the vac line tap on the carb is not capped off, you will have an intake air leak, making you very lean....

but first,... you need to set the camchain to the right timing...
I'm sorry I don't remember the alignment protocol offhand...
Some mark is set to 1 o'clock on the top gear right?...
(1 o'clock doesn't sound very precise does it?)...

All gears are good and free spinning (i spinn the motor by hand when valves have tension on them to make sure i'm not gonna slap something that'll break.  My thing is that i was off by 5 teeth and she is just NOW starting to run..... i figure 1 more shouldn't slap anything BUT i will check anyways, she's going back after 1 more tooth. if she doesn't run right.... i know she needs to go back a tooth and get proper fuel supply on her.

I'll update with what i find.

1-o'clock isnt very accurate at all. and theres the thing that TCD is like 2 teeth long.... so take your pick, 1-o'clock or 1:30???.....

Versy,... are there any pics on site, of the proper gear alignment?...

very dark 1's that you can't see anything from. (from what i've seen)

Just finished getting her back to spinning point and she's not puffin right. i went 1 tooth too far. I'm wondering if she wasn't just running SUPER lean like you said serowbot....

When i go and test the compression i don't have the coil plugged up, exhaust on, etc.... all i'm checking is the sound the motor makes when the starter spinns her. i think i went too far.

1 tooth back, properly bend plates to hold bolts in place. clean all bonded surfaces. install new gaskets. Fuel tank, seat.

ITS TIME TO RIDE!!!!!!!!

I'll let you guys know how she does.... its times like these i wish i wore jeans to work instead of stupid Cintas shorts! (in case something goes wrong)

couldn't find OF's rebuild walkthru
but found his timing cam one

see how the marks are slightly rotated from horizontal?
that's from cam chain stretch, guide or gear wear.
so slightly ccw from horizontal is the correct way.
make sure the timing marks on the crank are aligned.

well that would explain why i couldn't find the cam timing marks..... i never took the cap off............. great!

anyhow. I really think i got it. when i went 1 farther it didn't sound right at all..... so i went 1 back. maybe a tank of fuel from petcock instead of a waterbottle of fuel from a vacuum line will make her a little happier.

We'll see!

Thanks for all the help.

Almost time to start her up! I'll let you know how it goes.
