Title: Definitive ignition/pick up coil test?
Post by BurnPgh on 05/19/10 at 13:01:59

My ignition coil seems to have died on me. Im betting thats more likely than the pickup coil but Id like to be able to test both before I go buying stuff.

I'm assuming that your engine doesn't start.. It could also be caused by fuel problems(carb, fuel tank/petcock) or compression problems(valve timing)

If no spark it still could be other things.. the primary coil resistance should be 1-7 ohms and the secondary coil resistance should be 10k-25k ohms on the ignition coil.. If this checks out fine.. check the ground wire.  The resistance should be close to 0 ohms.  check the sparkplug lead wire.. check wires in and out of the ignition control box.. you need a specilized tool to check the ignition control box so you can check everything else first then either replace the control box by process of elimination or take it to the dealer.
