Title: Kick-Start mod???????
Post by PipJones on 05/19/10 at 08:01:47

Has anyone heard of, tried, or seen a kickstart mod for one of these beasts???

Wouldn't ever want to.

Clearly remember kick starting a Ducati 450 scrambler -- was tickled to death first time I fired up a Savage by hitting the starter button -- would never ever consider going backwards to a kickstarter on such a large single.

Been talked about many times.
Bottom line, if you got the money to redesign the case... have at it.

While you are at it, you could also design a hand crank for your car.  Just about as practical.

My old DT175 had a magneto so a 10 year old totally dead battery would kick in the first kick.

The LS650 uses a CDI ignition and if the battery is not working the electric starter then the kicker is not kicking the ignition so you can kick all you want you want but it is not living fire.

C'mon guys, don't be so negative. It's not the matter of practicality, but the old-school looks!! Just like bobbing and chopping, we're not doing stuff to make it easier - but mor eye appealing (to us, at least).  ;)

To me - kick starter is cool. Very cool.

Build yourself a suicide hand shifter and a foot clutch petal then, it is more doable and is relatively more "functional" and it will give you all the retro cool lookn' points you could ever wish for.

Thought about it... but naw. Too dangerous for my short city rides. I bought an internal clutch set. Think I'll make it visually - clutchless!! Bicycle look, that's what I want. Have no time   :(

But what about this kick start? anybody have any ideas?? Links? Hints? There must be something that can be easily modified.

Kick start does look pretty cool but I can't imagine going through all the trouble to add it to the savage.
Like already mentioned, I don't think I'd wanna kick that big single over either! I've got a 660 single in my quad with a backup pull start. I tried to pull start it one day, just to see if I could. Well, I can't... It just about ripped my fingers off!!! Screw that!

I wanna see that internal clutch setup. I guess it twists? That sounds grooooovy!!

It twists. I got a whole set, internal throttle and clutch. Basically two identical assemblies that pull on cable when twisted. Cables run through the handlebar.

if you really like the look just take a kick starter off a old dirt bike and superglue it to your tranny.  It'll give you the look.  then you can pretend to kick it over while pushing the start button..  :P  .

I had an old car that had an exhaust on one side and a tow hook on the other side.. Put matching exhaust tips on both sides so it looked like dual exhaust without hurting performance.

Hahaha, superglue, huh?? Duct tape sounds even better!!   ;)

Hey Paladin!!!!
Good to see you chiming in!  :D

Yea, the kickstart thing comes up every year it seems.

A kicker would require:
1) A hardened gear that some how connects to the gears in the clutch side of the bike.  And whcih existing gear would you connect to, to turn the engine the correct way to start the bike  :-/
2) The kicker assembly with a kicker clutch to disengage the kicker when the bike starts up.
3) A modified side case to fit all that and be strong enough to take the stresses that kicking a 650CC single cylinder would produce and still keep the very precise gear alignments needed for a engine that red-lines at 6500 RPM.

Basically, you need to be a machinist, mechanical engineer, motorcycle tech.

It could be done, but lots of time involved..... and I would rather be riding... .  ;D

www.emachineshop.com

you can download their cad software and then design a part and they can produce it for you.. It'll cost hundreds to thousands to produce one custom piece, but if you get say 1000 copies you can get it down to probably 20-50$ each depending on complexity and materials.

good if your doing a limited run of a product, or building a very expensive one off bike.

dropping a harley motor and tranny and a kick start attachment would be a better use of money.

kick starter

and a donor harley

It'll have all the wiring ignition box exhaust etc needed to do the swap..
so for 4,000 you can have a kick start savage with a harley motor.. :)

Here's where i was going with this......

I am an automotive tech, don't do much fab stuff on bikes or whatever, but there are 2 techs in the next shop over. one has a 72 CB750 and the other has a 74 CB550, both of which have kick starts. Both of which start on the first kick every time.

I was thinking about how nice it would be (whether its more work or not) to be able to kick your bike to life, when your battery cant.

Title: Re: Kick-Start mod???????
Post by bill67 on 05/21/10 at 15:25:23

Those 2 bikes are fours they kick over 4 times easier than a Single.

Title: Re: Kick-Start mod???????
Post by dasch on 05/22/10 at 00:32:35

Yup, with 4cyl you only fight compression of one small cylinder at the time, and if it picks up - it helps you with others.
On the other hand - there's 1.2 and 1.6 liter Harleys on youtube with kickstarts... That's 600 or 800cc per cylinder. And it works.

can a 1200 sporster motor and tranny FIT in the savage frame without any extensive mounting fabro???

Just curious.... Might be fun.

If you've got the Time, Money & Abilities, anything can be done  ;D I don't think I have any of the 3, so I'm not going to try it anytime soon  8-)

KLX650 C models are electric start, R models are kick start. Both can be done on either.

I beg to differ!! Why have we discussed push-start about 500 times so far?? If push start works - kick start would too.

Title: Re: Kick-Start mod???????
Post by Serowbot on 05/22/10 at 12:39:39

Good point..  I guess it would work with a low battery, but not a dead one?... :-?...
..but for that emergency, we already have the push start...

Kicks do look cool though...  ;)...

Here's an idea!... Just fake it...
Put your leg up,... hit the start button, and kick downward through the air,... and people will think you kicked it over...  ;D...

Title: Re: Kick-Start mod???????
Post by Oldfeller on 05/22/10 at 13:26:49

Depends on voltage in system.

Push or kick would not drain the voltage away to nothing, while the starter certainly would.

Just be careful not to fall over the bike when you do that ;D

There's another idea, motorswap with a motor and tranny that already have a kickstart, dirt bikes and enduros with bigger displacement engines... or 2 strokers(if they don't check emissions where your at).. A dirtbike engine should have no problem fitting inside the confines of the frame..

Stretch the frame in three directions and it will fot just fine, or just get a cheap sporty, take the front end, wheels, fenders, ect. off of your 325lb. savage and put them on the 500+ lb. sportster and hope it holds together :)

sounds like a GREAT idea!!!!! I'll have to try that sometime...... (not really)

I test-rode an 883 once, it seemed heavy, but not THAT heavy. I'da keep it as is. Few touches with angle grinder here and there, perhaps...  ;)
