Title: Throttle Cable
Post by cursal on 05/18/10 at 10:46:22

Yesterday Morning as I was pulling out of the driveway I wasn't more than 20 yards away and my throttle grip rotated all the way around and revved up loud then there was a light cracking noise.

I pushed the bike back up to the drive and took the hand grip and button housing apart and found that the throttle cable SNAPPED.

When I went to get parts they said it would take 7-9 business days to get it, two-three if I paid $15 more for express shipping.

I needed a new petcock too, so I ordered them both.

$121.00 and now I am without my Suzi :( until parts get here and then off to my garage machanic (who teaches me as he works and I pay) So it may be Monday before I have her back on the road.

A whole day spent working with bike and tracking down parts.
Tomorrow a I will get her towed to the garage.

Just wanted to remind people, keep your cables lubed up. This cable was so rusted it snapped (it is 12 years old). Glad it didn't happen when I was 100 miles out in the middle of nowhere on a joy ride.

That is a good reminder, I probably need to lube mine now.  I think it was OldFeller that told us how to lube them with a plastic bag and a rubber band.

That was good stuff there!

If you can cancel that order and get a '02 yamaha raptor 660 petcock instead. Its only about $25-30 as opposed to the stock petcocks $80 and it bolts right up. Wont have to worry about leaky diaphrams or vacuum line issues anymore. ON-OFF-RESERVE.

Just got my bike running today. Parts Came in yesterday.

BurnPgh, I wish I saw that sooner. Oh well, she is still stock now.

The new Throttle Cable is fantastic!  When I roll the grip now it is so light and slick I can roll it with my pinky finger  ;D

Now riding two up, I figure, won't give me wrist cramps anymore. Such a difference.... it's really amazing.

Next up for the summer - cruise control. something like the BreakAway http://www.brakeawayproducts.com/productinfo.html

And a rejet w/o the need to switch muffler pipes. (i know there is a link around here somewhere for that mod)

Hard Bags before next fall.

Great to be riding, even in the gray and rainy NW.

That's good advice, keep the cables lubed or they will pop sooner or later.  I use Dri-slide (a graphite based lube) because unlike grease or cable wax, it never gums up or makes the cables harder to pull than if you'd done nothing.

For a new cable I had good luck with MotionPro, they are very handy when you need a frankencable for a non-stock carb.  The cable was good and thick, and only about 35 bucks.
