Title: cat out of bag time
Post by Phelonius on 05/15/10 at 13:14:57

Okay, here it goes.  I have sold my kayak, lathe, drill press, welder, Hydraulic lift table, hydraulic pipe bender, XY vise and am selling nearly everything in the garage except the motorcycles. As much of my household stuff as I can too.
The plan is to get a portable as I can. i want to be able to get three motorcycles, Two of them with sidecars, and all the rest of my possessions that will fit into a twenty foot conex box, and ship it.
I have finally had enough of riding in the cold rain and sleet. I wish to ride in the warm rain with no sleet. Maybe even some sunshine.
I plan on going about 2300 miles southwest this time.
Since my health has removed my ability to be a long rider anymore,
( I consider a long rider one who rides in the same general direction for three or more days.) I do not think I will feel restricted by not being able to ride more than a hundred miles in one direction.
That's right, I am going to move to the largest of the Sandwich Islands, motorcycles and all.
If I can find the right place, I will re-equip a machine shop after I settle in.
Target date for the move is in August.

Phelonius ;)

I just googled Sanwhich Islands they said they are uninhabited, and all precipitation falls as snow, are you sure about this ? And I doubt very much that you could buy a used lathe there for sale.
I must be looking at the wrong Sandwhich Islands,Aren't they British ?

The 1778 arrival of British explorer James Cook was Hawaii’s first documented contact with European explorers. Cook named the islands the "Sandwich Islands" in honor of his sponsor John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich.

Wow, that's quite a big step. Sounds cool, was wondering how you picked that destination?

The town of Sandwhich Ontario (south of Windsor) was also named after  John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich.

Don't know if the Brits were hungry but the natives were.  Capt. Cook was cooked and partially eaten before an armed landing party got the rest of him back.
That is the island I shall live on.  Chosen because it has more riding miles than any of the others and a lower cost of living.
I have a Moto Guzzi riding friend who will let me live in an apartment for 500 a month until I find a place of my own.
With the money from selling all my stuff, I should have enough to buy a new lathe and new milling machine.  I figure the move will cost me about 10,000 to get me and the bikes there.  By the time all the selling is done, I should have about 30,000 in my war chest.
Maybe Savage Wahine will come over from her island and ride with me some time.  Kaui is only about 300 miles away WNW.

First off there is no such place as Kaui, there is a place called Kauai, one of the Hawaiin Islands,in the Pacific ocean, the Sandwich Islands sit in the Atlantic.Does this Island have a name ? is this April the 1st ? Do you actually know were you are going ?
What will be written on your shipping boxes, beside "this side up" ?

Ok you are still not telling the name of the Island, why is that ?
Now if the Island is indeed Kauai it's only 33 miles long and 22 wide
the coastal route from top to bottom is about 80 miles , So two hr run is about it,you would be bored to tears in a few weeks.

Phelonius -

Have you spent any lenghy amounts of time in Hawaii?  I haven't been there for a coon's age, and have no desire to return.

The general manager at my airport operation spent 3 years in Hawaii, and couldn't wait to get back to Ohio.  He said the low, gray clouds and mud of winter are preferrable to being marooned on an island.

While Hawaii always sounds marvelous to those who have only vacationed there, after about 6 months, many, many people get island fever and want off the rock.  Of course, if a person can afford to fly back to the mainland and stay for a month every year or so, it's not quite as bad.

Just a humble thought.

Hawaii or havaiki depending on whether you a hearing a local or a maori speak it
The big island.  I will pick an address after I make a recon trip in late July.
Average coldest day in Hilo is 64 degrees F.
Average hottest day in Hilo is 88 degrees F.
Kona coast is a little warmer, hope I can find a place I can afford on that side.

I knew I had mispeller Kauai, but couldn't remember the correct way. Thanks.

I'm with jerry on this one, my sister in law thought she was blessed to go there and run an ice cream parlour and free rent on a little apartment over the store, she was back in 6 months, got the dreaded cabin fever ,or island fever in her case.Good thing you are doing a recon, If I had to move I would go to Arizona, great weather all year, and not to many illegal immigrents anymore ;)

The Big Island is a great choice for a motorcyclist because it's, well,  big.  Big enough for some varied terrain, and some great roads between various destinations.

Unfortunately, the ferry service was short-lived, so taking your own bike to other islands isn't very cost-effective.

All the best, and I hope you like Japanese food!

I have lived in and worked on these islands in the past, I know what I am getting into.
I spent thirty days working on the big island repairing lighthouses, it has always been my favorite.
While it is true that the other islands can be a bit confining, the big one has more area than ALL of the others combined.  Mahalo.

Phelonius ;)
BTW I can not understand the confusion about what island it is. I have said from the first that it was( the big island).
For as long as I have known Hawaii, it has been called the big island.
It is the island named Hawaii by Hawaiians.
The cooked Captain cook is the one who named it the Sandwich Islands, little knowing that he would be the next sandwich.
When he first arrived, he had the luck to arrive during the feast of Lono and was mistaken for the personification of that god. Hence the hospitality was excellent.  When he shortly returned after a storm to effect some repairs to the ship, his status as a god was revoked since Lono only comes once a year.
To exacerbate things, his lieutenant Blighe, yes that Blighe, shot and killed one of the locals unnecessisarally in an incident that could have been handled with diplomacy.  Relations with the haolis deteriorated until the captains goose was cooked , or rather, the captain was cooked.
this happened at what is now Napoopo. I probably forgot how to spell that too.  But in 81 I sat a few feet away from the place he was killed and ate my lunch while working on the napoopo lighthouse.  I finished it off with a coconut that fell from a nearby tree.  From pictures i have seen of that place since then, it appears to have been cleared of some of the kiavas that had overgrown it at the time.
