Title: "front tire only" (verslagen was right)
Post by Stimpy on 05/15/10 at 06:39:30

What would happen if I put a "front only" tire on the rear of my 250lb yamaha 125cc?

I think a 110/90-16 Dunlop 404 would replace my aging
3.50x16 bridgestone. I already have a new 404 mounted on
the front and I want them to match but cannot find a 404 rear.

Thanks, RP.

your bike will want to go in reverse all the time, those front tires take quite a bit of training. ;)

If you put a rear on the front, I've heard you put them on backwards.
something to do with the bias.

Its very dangerous to run a motorcycle tire backwards. The seams are glued and designed to run in only one direction. Running the tire backwards the centrifical force may cause the seams to seperate. Not a very pretty sight.

And check the load rating. Here:

I am a devout flaunter of warnings & a rare reader of instructions.

I wouldnt tread those waters without someone telling me they did it & lived.

he he,, tread, I snuck tread into a tire thread...

If you are not riding at the absolute limits of the machines capability, I see no problem.  You are not mounting it to rotate backwards so if you are just trying to save money by using a tire you already have, go for it.
If all it has for tread is ribbed pattern, don't try cornering at the hairy edge of the envelope.

I had a motorcycle shop mount a rear tire on a high powered sportbike I owned several years back. I rode it for 2 or 3 thousand miles and the bike handled terribly. It was a radial. The tire was Avon. One day I was cleaning the bike and I saw the rotational arrow was pointing backwards. I called Avon engineers and they told me to get that tire off and throw it away immediately before I got killed. The avon engineers told me the radial belts were ruined and warned me about the seperation issue. All the motorcycle shop wanted to do was reverse it. Never went back to that shop. Do what you want to but after talking to the tire engineers I'll never intentionally run a motorcycle tires backward.

yes never reverse radial tires.
once they are riden they take a set
if reversed the belts will shift again but in a bad way ruining the tire

biased ply tires can be reversed though

So it all worked out!  :D

I now have a new 120/80-16 Continental in the back ($45, vietnam)
and a new 90/90-17 dunlop 404 in the front ($75usd, japan), and
since the bike weighs only 115kg and drives only 115km/h both
tires should last longer than the engine, yay!

Also turns out that this particular model of nylon continental
tire, is reversible and should be installed with opposite
rotation direction depending where it goes, I did not know that.
the dunlop on the other hand is a regular "front only" tire.

They both are broken-in now and have awesome grip both wet and
dry and pass with flying colors the stimpy "curves of the Eifel" test!

** Not my video but this was shot a few miles from my house.
See now WHY I needed a new set of wheels? Curves baby!  ;)

Anyway, thanks guys, I'll keep you posted on any new mods and/or
issues and will hopefully shoot my own video soon and post it here.

Richard.

Radically different Debbie-downer topic alert!

...crap (didn't notice till now) can you see the chemtrails
at the 1 minute mark? Man we're all so baked here too,
every single day the sky looks like if zeus was doing
cloud-grafitti out of boredom.

And we also have the country's highest cancer rate because of all the
army air bases around here dumping gas when landing heavy, yay!

Oh well, it was truly nice meeting you all  ::)

Nope, me too. ;D  Heck, when I'm driving to and from work in the car, I find myself leaning my head into the curves. :D
