Title: Setback In My Brother's Diagnosis...
Post by Southpaw on 05/14/10 at 08:40:10

Just got off the phone with my folks, and my brother's latest bone marrow test came back positive for leukemia again. The hospital he is in has done as much as they can and doesn't do marrow transplants etc. so he is transferring to another cancer center that does! Quite the setback from a week ago, when we were just waiting for his platelette count to come up for him to come home! Kinda wish he'd have gone where they're transferring him months ago, maybe he'd be home by now! Oh, well, coulda, shouda, woulda....didn't! Please keep him in your prayers folks! I'll probably be off the board for a few days as I start my 3-midnight shift week and deal with this!  :P

Wish him all the best of british luck.
Will you be able to transfer bone marrow? or have you a donor already ?

That is not the news you were hoping for.  But with the transfer, maybe things will improve.  I am praying for you and thinking about you all.

Thanks folks, I'm afraid I'm a bit down in the dumps about this right now and appreciate your kind words. To answer your question, Mick, I'm a good blood type match on paper, but the rules for the platelette registry are a bit odd and for whatever the reason the Dr. my brother was seeing didn't want to even discuss this until all other options were explored. (As it's been explained to me by others, once you register, you agree to donate to WHOEVER is the closest match thats on the waiting list - not just the person you register to help. I'm assuming there was a possibility I could have been called up before my brother's need came up and I couldn't refuse it or something like that? I'd be glad to help ANYBODY that's in this position, that doesn't bother me! I'd just hope it wouldn't come at the expense of my brother getting the help he needs.) It no longer matters How we got to this point, this is the path the doctors have chosen and I'm poised to do whatever it takes, - but still don't know for certain that I'm the match he needs. I expect we will take care of those tests in the next couple of weeks and the new doctors and facility will be more forthright in answers!

I talked to my brother last night, he moved to the new facility this weekend and they laid out their plan of attack on this thing. He goes through a marrow density? test today and then on two chemos and a release agent this week to get the leukemia out of his marrow instead of just his blood. The marrow transplant now seems to have moved from "just an option" to "only a matter of time". Things seem to be moving much quicker here! It's gotta be better for him that just sitting around waiting!
I go in today with my medical records to get signed up for the first mouth swab test, then back in for blood tests if I'm close enough of a match. Thanks for all the good wishes and prayers, they are appreciated!

Dan

Mrs. Doc and I are in the potential marrow donors registry -- it'd be one heckuva coincidence if one of us turns out to be a match!

Best wishes for success!
