Title: 160/80 on rear wheel and...
Post by dasch on 05/12/10 at 09:53:51

... belt rubs a bit. Got the shim for front pulley. Has anybody shimmed the rear one? How? If it had more horses, I would machine a full round plate with holes. But now I'm thinking small washer shims under all 5 (or 6, whatever) bolts should do. What's your thoughts?

let us know if you fix the rubbing problems and lets see some pics of the tire..

Deal. I shimmed both front and rear pulley today with 2mm shims and it still rubs a bit when in allignment. I can get it just a bit off alignment and stop rubbing, or shim another mm or two. This is gonna be a tight squeeze, guys. Tire is getting close to everything everywhere!! But it will work.
James, I will try to take some pics today. It's getting dark in the garage.

No problem erltytimz, as soon as I get some time to mount everything. It's on the jack now, garage is too dark for my camera. This is what it looked like in different phases:

Voila, all with DIY Wide White Walls:

Wasn't easy, 4mm shims on front and rear pulley, some bending and the angle grinder get busy too. More pics to follow.

Looks like you've found a way to keep apart of the belt clean.

Ok, can I ask a dumb "girl" question.... Will weight on the bike not cause that to rub?  It looks awfully tight!

Title: Re: 160/80 on rear wheel and...
Post by dasch on 06/18/10 at 13:00:15

No, weight won't move the wheel left, right or forward. Just upwards. and my fender (once I put it on) moves upd/down with the wheel - so no problem.

Man that looks pretty tight. Did the tire Mfg. provide any data on the projected centrifugal growth of the tire under load?

Just rechecked. There's about 2cm space infront. Plenty. Around 4mm on the right and more than an inch to the left. Now, clearance to the belt is about 2mm cca. I think there's no way it stretches that far. Another famous last sentence  ;)

You should be golden. If you've got 2cm in front (~3/4") that will be plenty. Just watch how you mount your fender. I wouldn't worry much about the sides as long as they clear.

Looks like the tread pattern is so blocky that it'll bump up & down just goin down the road, but the whole job looks good.

This is a Continental street tire sold as direct replacement for Honda Shadow. May look rough on the pic, but it's more meat than grooves in nature.

Yup, erlytimz, have enough space for fender bracket and fender up front. Not worried at all. (and another famous last sentence, hahaha). Front is a 90/90R19 Avon. Should cut curves like a knife! working on wiring now, need another week or two, and then the great reveal!

Don't worry,... it'll only rub for a while....
...parts make their own clearance eventually...  :-?...

nice like the white walls too.. you'll have to tell us how it rides.. if the big tire slows it down much..

Well... usually people post videos of them running circles around the wife with a camera, or cheesy high speed drive-bys... I picked something totally different  ;D

And yeah, the tire doesn't strech nor rub, even at 100km/h. We'll see about higher speeds soon. Runs very well with tall rear tire. I need to design a seat over winter.
