Title: WOT lean issue and silly main jet revised
Post by jabman on 05/08/10 at 01:55:11

hello all,

as you may know i posted a while ago about a problem with my bike lean surging above 3/4 throttle despite having a 177.5 main jet  :o

ive pulled the carb apart today for another clean by putting the nozzle of a can of carb cleaner over each passage way and making sure that the fluid blasts out of the right hole on the other side.

just to make sure everything is ok in there ive taken some pics if anybody can see anything out of the ordinary. I held the diaphragm up to a lamp and there's no holes in it.

all the jets and needle have the mikuni symbol on them so i guess there genuine

it has a 5C16 needle which according to my manual is stock for my 1993 bike

the size 70 pilot air jet is also stock

the only jets i could remove is the pilot, main and pilot air. Is this normal?

other jets and mods are im my sig

any more info just ask!!!!!

ive still got the carb in pieces  but im tempted to just put it back together and drill out a smaller jet to make even bigger one. this thing is as clean as a whistle.

For surging I generally see that the white spacer is usually cut down.
And when it's cut down, will act like a larger jet is put in.
A stack of metal washers is as good as a single one and easier to adjust.

my white spacer is whole and the circlip is in the middle of the three slots. the midrange is PERFECT with this as is the low range

this surging is only at 3/4 throttle to wide open.   with that 177.5  main jet?

Don't know what to tell you other than that's the largest jet I've heard of in these things.  And maybe you're going the wrong way   :-?
What intake and exhaust mods have you done?

well i have a dyna exhaust and a big big K&n air filter connected with a silicon hose to the carb.

this is really annoying me now   i think a 182.5 jet and lower the needle should fix it but im going on increasingly long day rides and need some reliability, dont want something clearing up and the running super super rich. lol

it went faster when i pulled the choke out  so that means lean   right ?

i'd have to agree with you.

i will take every tool i need to change a jet on the trip  :) just in case

JabMan,

I'd have to agree that all signs point to a lean problem.
Maybe I'm way off base, far from and expert, but is there a chance that there might be something else keeping it from getting the correct flow of fuel?
Maybe a float problem, fuel too low in the bowl and it can't keep up with the throttle demand or
Drawing a vacuum when it's trying to pull the fuel from the bowl. Engine sucking more air than it needs to burn the fuel. (choke increased the RPM)
Pinched or otherwise obstructed fuel line.

Jets that big are compensating for an air leak somewhere...

Are you down to like, 30 mpg now?....

Compared to the cfpm of air being consumed at 3/4 to WOT, it would have to be a huge air leak.
Even a very small air leak would be big problem at idle.

Why don't I recall 3 slots on the needle ?

early bikes had 3 slots for adjustment
that's something the epa took away from you.

yes, another good clue...

what's your mpg?
50 mpg would be average for mild performance bike.

Snowmobiles weren't CV carbs but they had 5 slots on their jet needle.

my mpg is good i think

the slide moves freely all the way up and down

i have found a small exhaust leak that i will fix today!!!

i have added some markers to my throttle grip and found that at exactly half throttle in 5th my bike does exactly 70mph (with 90 profile rear)

is this good?? :-?

I vote for checking the float leve first after fixing the air leaking into the exhaust.

float level is adjusted to the spec in the manual with the tab just touching but not pushing in the spring loaded pin of the valve

You can get a real float reading by put a clear tube in the drain hole at the bottom of the bowl.  Then holding the tube up verticle along side the carb.

Your bike does have a breather in the box ?

Could be your bike has a "HOPPED UP" cam and needs a Whopper Jet !

I basically agree with Chief Gunner, Serowbot and Lancer about your machine sucking air somewhere... could even be in the intake manifold to head area or the vacume line feeding the pedcock ?

or the Manifold itself ?

What about the air vents not letting air in the bowl so gas CAN come out ?  Wouldn't that be a quick and easy fix .

Keep us up to date and good luck

thanks guys   turns out i had 2 exhaust leaks at the header and muffler. lots of exhaust paste later and it looks fixed.

ill take it for a test ride now
