Title: Gas Stations???
Post by SmilinLDR on 05/06/10 at 19:20:16

Okay, so I am planning a 1500 mile IBA bun buster in June. In planning I have a stretch on US-95 between Winnemucca NV and Jordan Valley OR that is beyond the range of my S40 and borderline with a spare gallon of fuel. Does anyone know if there are gas stations inbetween. McDermint NV? Burns Junction?

I have tried Mapquest, Google, AAA trip tik, yellow pages. There is an indication of a station in McDermint but nothing that is really positive.

Using Google Maps and the Street View, I see a Sinclair gas station in McDermitt on 95.  Just south of Codero Mine Road on the east side of 95.

I also "see" a station at the junction of 95 and 78.
Another at 95 and 290.
Might be others as well.

I would make some phone calls!

If you know the zip codes for the little towns along the route, you can use this http://www.automotive.com/gas-prices/index.html to search for them.  I see two close to 89421 (that's McDermitt's zip according to google), one in McDermitt and one in Orovada.

You have to be pretty careful about those remote areas of Oregon.  Some might only be available to commercial vehicles since the rest of us in Oregon are not allowed to pump our own gas.

Thanks for the help. I'm curious too about not being allowed to pump your own gas? NJ is or at least used to be that way, Oregon is too?

Thanks again for the help!

Yep, I guess it is too dangerous for us common folk to fill our tank here in Oregon.  I have gotten used to it though and it is nice to have someone run out and fill your tank for you when it is snowing and blowing.  Might even wash your windows too if you pick the right station.

Anyway, in out of the way places where there is not a lot of business, some of the gas stations closed or operate at reduced hours so it might be a good idea to call ahead just to be sure.

We were in Oregon a couple of years ago. Only station employees are allowed to pump fuel into a vehicle. Must be to help prevent spillage. I had never hear of it  before.
I don't mind it with a car, but I prefer to fill my own bike up. It would be too easy for someone to spill gas on the bike or scratch the tank. Either would be unacceptable.

Whenever I've filled up on the south side of the river (Oregon), they always let me fill up my bike myself.  Guess they don't wanna be responsible for hosing some big biker's ride down with gas! ;D

One of my bosses has lived there all his life.  Went back east and rented a car.  When he went to fill it up before returning it, he had to ask for help filling it up, he'd never pumped his own gas in his life! ::)

Last time I was through there, gas was available at Denio on the border just south of the eastern edge of Steens' mountain.
Tell them the big guy on the Harley with the accordion sent you.

2 cent's.
While stationed in NJ I asked about that law concerning attendants only pumping gas and was told it was a job creation law designed to help those who would be considered "unemployable".
I envy your plans mate! Would love to face that challenge. Smells like adventure... a scent I can't seem to generate much anymore.

Here in NJ, I pump the gas in my bike 100% of the time. Car, never.

There is one gas station in southern Maine that I let the attendant pump the gas for me. It's a little one pump station and there is a really nice looking young lady that pumps the gas. I make sure she bends down close to the tank so she can see what she's doing. ;) ;).
Anywhere else I pump my own gas.
