Title: What's in the gasket kit?
Post by Chief Gunner on 05/05/10 at 17:52:33

I'm going to need to replace my head and top cover when I get home this fall from the 'sandbox'. I figured I might as well pull the cylinder and check it and the piston. So I'm researching parts and ran into the Gasket kit listed at three  different sights. They go for around 90 - 110 depending on the sight and they are listed as part 51 under the cylinder head section on the microfiche. I want to replace everything I take off but don't want to end up spending another 50 -70 and have half a bag of gaskets I don't need. I've tried E-mailing customer service but I'm getting no return. >:(

Going to be repairing from my JB Weld Camshaft Journal trial from last year. Didn't take too well and I've got significant wear on the camshaft lobes and rocker arms now.

By the way, if anyone still has a decent cylinder head and top cover with all the trimmings taking up space this fall I'll surely be willing to pay fair price. Looking at well over a thousand if I buy OEM. :'(

You get one set of everything... almost.
The stock kit does not include the valve seals.
The kit made by athena includes them, but the special figure 8 seal is a round o-ring, which works but can pop out before you get the cover on.
And neither one tells you which one goes where.

Thanks verslagen, that makes the choice so much easier.
I'm hoping that I can score a running head and topcover combo on the marketplace string when I get back. I get so much more enjoyment cleaning and repairing items than just bolting new ones on. Saving the money sometimes is just to justify the extra time spent in the garage!! Hopefully I can get one that already has valves and good seals in it.

This site is a welcome break in my day.

You might want to visit w/ Lancer about the nitride(Izzat it?) treatment in the bore.

silicon carbide for the bore. Nitride for the cam chain.

Thanks for the info guys, it'll be a few months before I get home, just trying to get a good direction to go with it and figure out how much $$ to put aside. Shouldn't be an issue, the wife loves taking rides with me and loves the Savage. When I took it out of service before I left she made me promise to fix it when I get back. I love honey-do lists like that!!

Thanks for the heads up on that sight. I wonder if all the sites get the parts from the same place? The head and top cover, at boulevard suzuki is about 50 dollars cheaper than what I found at Babbitts online, but the fiche at babbitts says it includes parts 1-8 which would be the valve guides etc. I can only assume that they might be already installed.
But the gasket kit is about 15 dollars cheaper.

Verslagen,

Man that got sucked up quick!!! 85 bucks plus shipping. Thanks for the heads up though. Looks like that's the route to go.
Never been much for buying things I can't lay my hands and eyes on, but I guess I take the same risk buying from an online store.

Looking to replace my cam chain in the near future. Would a gasket kit be the best way to go when it comes to the gaskets needed?

Where is that figure-8-gasket supposed to sit that is mentioned early in the thread?

Just a clutch cover gasket is all you need.
The figure 8 is rubber, never had to replace one.. yet..

All you need is the clutch cover gasket and the figure 8 seal that goes between the head cover and head.
For the figure 8 seal, you can use a nitril o-rings, that will do the job.
Just takes a little bit of care.

You should also look at the head plug and the cam cover.
Depending on the sealant used in the prior rebuild, they can be hard to clean up.

Partly for checking the flywheel nut but probably mostly for curiosity I removed the left side cover as well so I will at least need the two big gaskets that sits on each side of the engine. If I buy the separately the price is about the same as the complete gasket kit.

I will probably try and use some substitute for the Three Bond 1216 that the Clymer manual recommends. Not sure if it's even possible to get that here in Sweden and also I believe that Loctite or some other manufacturer probably has a product that will work just as well. I have found at least two silicone based products intended for engine rebuilds so I refuse to believe that Three Bond 1216 is the only thing that will work.

Chief Gunner, welcome.
Thanks for your service.

I have head/cover units for $400; everything checked and/or replaced.
Also complete gasket sets for $75.

Silicone carbide treatment for the cylinder bore is no longer available.
Nitrided Camshaft chains are available, for now, just a few left. $85

Holler if interested. [ch128526][ch127949]
