Title: brakes
Post by suzukirider on 05/05/10 at 11:48:20

I have a 2009 S40/savage with 4600 miles on it.  Yesterday I needed new front brake pads.  This seems a little soon.  Any comments?  is this typical?  I love the bike, it is fun to ride and I find it very comfortable and peppy.

Thanks.  Well I had the standard put back on but next time I will know better.  I was kinda in a jam at the time so had them changed out.

I went with EBC red back pads (kevlar) at 4000 miles.
At 8000 miles the back pad (fork side)was worn into the backing plate and the front plate (piston side) was worn to about 1/16th inch thick.
I ride pretty hard but try to stay off the brakes as much as possible.
I have had very good luck with EBC's on other bikes...maybe I just got a bad set? I guess we will find out in about 4000 miles :)

I had an '83 Suzuki 650 Tempter. Its OEM front pads wore out at about 5500 miles, if I remember correctly. I replaced them with a non-OEM set (but I don't remember whose) and when I sold the bike at about 14000 miles the pads were still OK. I now have an '07 S40 with over 6000 miles, and the OEM pads still seem OK. The difference seems to be that I now live out of town, and when I had the Tempter I lived in town. You brake more in town, with STOP signs and traffic lights. In short, if you use the brakes they wear out. If you drive in such a way that you don't have to brake much, they last a lot of miles. Remember that brake pads are a consumable.

Actually almost all my riding has been country roads cause I live in the country and where I love to ride.

I replaced my stock pads at 100 miles,Because I also have a Suzuki 1500 that the brakes were noisy and I replaced them And the replacements were a lot better,The replacements on the S40 are a lot better than the stock brakes too.EBC pads

My Savage (see signature) is pretty much exclusively an urban warrior and it goes through front brake pads pretty liberally.

Got 3500 miles on the original brake pads.

Replaced those with Ferodo's.  Those lasted 4100 miles.

Replaced those with EBC Organics.  They currently have 3200 miles on them.

Conversely, the original front brake pads on my GL1800 currently have over 70,000 miles on them!

I had to change my front stock brake pads at around 4300 miles, which hit this spring so I could pass the inspection.
