Title: Exhaust sound
Post by Drove on 05/05/10 at 00:04:24

Is there a DIY mod that can change the sound of the stock exhaust to something less scooter-like?

HD dyna muffler, looks good, sounds good, free flowing enough to require rejetting.

Supertrapp, not as pretty as the Dyna, IMO, but I got it because it works so well. Its tuneable, good sound, not raucus, kinda spendy, if you set it up to sound good, its gonna make you rejet, too.

Other options exist, plenty of them.

And ALL of the options will make your motorcycle illegal to operate on public roads, as they are violations of the Federal Clean Air Act. The only legal option, under Federal law, is the stock exhaust system. Unless, of course, you can find a quieter system.

Yes, I have an "indirect fit" out behind my shop,.... has a 2 3/4" inlet, and a 2 1/4 outlet,.....just a little fiberglass/beer can mix, it'll fit ;D

Sounds good I just need a couple rolls of duck tape and I can make a direct fit. ;D

Heres an easy alternative,....drill 8- 13/64 holes  on a 1.625 dia circle
Sounds perdy good IMO,.....no jetting either ;)

I'm looking for responses that favour the "DIY" portion of my question. What can i do to the stock exhaust the alter the sound? Does drilling holes, for instance, really help. Right now the bike sounds a little bit like a scooter and i'd like to beef it up a little without spending any money. Possible?

BTW, different federal laws up here in Canada so no worry about making the mods.

I said that it did didn't I ? Others have done it too. I never heard any complaints. And if you don't like it, that was the reason for the multiple small holes,.....they could be plugged in 2 minutes w/ a mig, and look no different than the plug welds that are already there.
There is info here on a "Hartman Mod" that is a major gut of the OEM exhaust. But you better have the cutting tools, and kiss your OEM exhaust goodbye if you ever want stock again.

Routy's suggestion is about as good as it gets if you want to continue using the stock muffler. Where do you hail from in Canada?

I live in Vancouver, where we get near year-round riding. Fantastic.

Thanks for the help!

Can someone put that sound on here?

I can do a lot of things, but a sound file is not one of them.
I did buy a cheap "wannabe Flip" vid camera for U-tube a month ago, and I ain't figured that out yet.

I have a 1/2 inch hole drilled in the center of mine up in there about 14 inches Its louder but doesn't really sound to good.It raised my power band up I guess about 300 rpm. There is to plates in there I only went through the first plate.

What did you use a 16" drill bit ? Wow ! Kinda hard to plug that hole if you don't like it :o

I just did the mod suggested by Routy.  Sounds good.

I will be installing a HD sportster muffler, cone filter and rejetting soon (parts and tools are starting to arrive).  I will put up a log of my install/or mess.

I figured I could take like a quarter or electrical knot out, super glue it on a 1/2 inch wood dowel, then put liquid weld on the other end push in there tap with a hammer let set over night the twist of the wood dowel,I used a extension with a bit on the end to drill the hole in it.I have drilled a lot of mufflers like this Suzukis don't get to loud,Honda's get pretty loud doing it.

Here's another off the wall suggestion. Take the plastic side cover off of the airbox. I know it sounds silly but it will let out a pretty good amount of induction noise. This gives the bike a much deeper roar under acceleration and will cost next to nothing. I say next to nothing because it will most likely require a jetting change. Just grab a bigger main jet (their about $6 locally-the guys on here should be able to point you to a size that's close to right) and do the "white spacer mod" as well as the baffle mods to the muffler others have told you about and your Savage will sound like a whole different animal. Total cost will most likely not exceed $20.
