Does someone know what kind of bearing are in the steering stem? Ball or tapered roller? Thanks.

Go to BikeBandit.com or RonAyers.com and look at the exploded diagram for your year model bike.

If it looks like a pair of ball bearings, it likely is a ball bearing based system.  

Tapered roller bearings will have thrust cap washers and such that a ball bearing system won't have.

tapered roller, better than ball for this application.
