Title: Loud Click, can't shift gears
Post by conlime on 04/30/10 at 11:49:59

Hello all, Went to start the bike today and no go. It has been sitting awhile so I ordered a new batt. When I go to start it it makes a LOUD click.... by the tank and then rapid clicks under the seat. (this happened before when my 1st batt died).

But I went to shift out of neutral today and couldn't (bike obviously wasn't on) but I couldn't get the gears to move. Is this normal...cause I don't think so. Can someone tell me what's going on please.

Thanks,
Adam

1st charge the battery, then check voltage while starting, even new batteries go bad.

2nd, never heard of this one.  but similar to shifting issues normal to bike and newb's.  apply pressure to shift, don't stomp on it, place your foot on it and roll forward or backward, should click in, no clutch needed.

If that don't work, lite a fire under the bike and drain the water off after it melts.   ;D

Dead battery...

It's normal to be hard to shift, when not running... ;)..

HA... I did charge it but still nothin. I did let it sit all winter without a tender. So it's my fault. I'll try that rolling trick next. I appreciate the quick response guys.

Even easier - Jump it! Then start it. Shifting is sometimes impossible without motor running.

Sit on the bike, pull the clutch in, rock it back & forth & work the shifter.Heck, try it w/o even touching the clutch, oughta work easy as pie.

I just went out to mine....(with kickstand down, using the clutch) wouldn't shift while in the "off" position, even if I turn the key "on" (kickstand down) wouldn't shift, cranked her up....shifts no problem.... some sort of safety mechinism maybe ?? BTW, she sat for 6 months with no starting before I got her, jumped her, let her run for @ an hour, then let her run every day for awhile, she's fine (no new battery)!    8-)
Weather report: High today of 92. ;D...think I can feel the warm breeze in my hair already......

no safety, purely mechanical, just need to roll it a bit to shift while off.

First loud click you hear under tank is the decompression solenoid I think. The lesser clicking is probably starter solenoid trying to make contact. Have you checked your batter cables? I'm looking for corrosion or loose connecting hardware. Worse yet would be a damaged cable either cut, nicked or bad end.

Shifting has been covered sufficiently.

Good luck mate.

Title: Re: Loud Click, can't shift gears ***Update***
Post by conlime on 05/06/10 at 17:32:42

UPDATE! I got a new battery and installed it. Thank you for the shifting advice. Worked great. After I installed the new battery I went to start her up and got the same result. One loud click nder the tank and then a series of lighter clicks under the seat.

- checked fuses all ok
- checked wires all ok
- no mods
- tried to push start and that wouldn't work either
- fresh spark plug

WHAT IS HAPPENING? WHY WON'T SHE CRANK. Do I have to take it to a mechanic?

Thank you.
Adam

might be hydrolock
or bearings froze
or just grab another straw outta the air...   :-?

take the plug out, and squirt some oil into the cylinder
then try and crank w/o plug

you changed the oil yet?
did you change the filter?  maybe you got in backwards?
the little hole goes on the spud toward the crank.

Thanks for the fast post!

Never heard of hydrolock before. So would I just take some of my oil and drip some in the spark plug hole? Regular oil?

I did change the oil this spring and the oil filter and did put the filter in correctly.

I should add that when I tried to push start it I did roll over twice and puff some air out of the exhaust. Don't know if that'll help with the diagnosis at all. Appreciate all the help I can get!

***oh I forgot to mention that sometimes when I depress the start button NOTHING happens...no clicks nothing. When that happens I have to rock it in gear a couple of times just to get the starter to click.***

Post by verslagen1 on 05/06/10 at 18:34:39

well if she puffed then it aint hydrolock
that's when the cylinder get full of fluid and fluid don't compress so it locks the piston in place

click...clickyclick still sounds like a bad battery
you gotta voltmeter? check the voltage when you try to start
should be nearly 12 to start with and shouldn't drop below 10? (OK guys help me out here) with the button pushed.

most of my straw snatching is to get you to talk about your bike, what you tried and all.  still can't read minds.

oh button push nothin' happens... clean contacts under button.
might be it too.  that could drop the voltage.

Again, thanks for the help. This being my first bike an all I want to fix everything myself!

So I should take apart the starter button and clean the connections there? Man this is frustrating.

that's where i would start.

little clues, just little ones. [smiley=vrolijk_26.gif]

the start switch I have added would sure make for a nice test here. Some day Ill post how again. Ill have to pop the seat & look at the decomp timer again.

Need to know what year bike is,there are differences in the way the starter circuit is wired. If you are hearing the decompressor solinoid activating there is nothing wrong with the starter switch on handlebar. What tools do you have, testlight, voltmeter??basic handtools??

Title: Re: Loud Click, can't shift gears
Post by conlime on 05/07/10 at 14:22:33

1986 - 8k on her

I took apart the starter switch and there was a lot of gunk and grime. Cleared that off. Now when depress the start button it at least tries to start...everytime. But still clicks like a sob when I try and start.

I'm off to get a voltometer now. If this ends up being the brand new battery I just bought...oh boy. Eslloyd I just have you're basic hand tools.

your decompression cable might be loose. That'll make it click a bit louder and should be harder to turnover. Just a guess.

Here's something you might try. While trying to crank it, TAP the starter motor with a small hammer. My thinking is maybe the brush to armature connection isn't making contact.
I still am of the mind that this is a connection issue.

I await with interest.

I thought I would mention the on off switch on the handlebars, it has happened, you sometimes forget to switch it on.
make sure the lead to the starter is bolted on tight, and battery terminals.

If you installed a new battery, then we'll eliminate the battery ends of the battery cables that attach to the battery. Next I would go to the other ends of those cables,.....and clean them.

If you want to prove it is a bad connection, (don't we know it is ?) jump 12 volts direct to the started terminal. But make sure the bike is in neutral, and control the sparks by touching the terminal quickly and positively :o

Tapped the starter and didn't have any results with that. I just took out the battery again. DID notice some corrosion on the battery wires. I scraped that gunk off. There wasn't a lot though. I also noticed that on the neg batt wire the corrosion has seeped into the actual wire at the head.

Is there a fix for this? or should I go buy another wire... and cut and splice?

Post by verslagen1 on 05/09/10 at 10:12:09

Did you try what routy said?

good idea to make sure it's not the starter.

make sure it's in neutral
take any known good battery
use jumper cables
black to frame or a bolt on the engine
pull back the rubber boot on top of the starter
touch red to the bolt
don't mind the sparks

if the bike was set to run it might even start.

if it goes a little bit then stalls, it's on the compression stroke.  either put it in gear and back it up till it hits the other side of the compression stroke or hit the starter button for a second to activate the decomp

Put a little baking soda and water in a mid size pill bottle, shake up,then dip wire end and let it soak for 10 minutes or so.Rinse with clean water .That should clean up most of the corrosion.Shine connector up with steel wool, scotch pad or medium grit sandpaper. After reassembley spray connector with a little oil or protector.

Bad Starter Solenoid.

Well Routy I did what you said with another batt and jumper cables. Nothing happened. So I'm guessing I'll try and find a new starter online and go from there.

Brush set is quite cheap $32 at one on-line supplier. Not that hard to install.Probably 85% chance that's all it needs.I'd take starter apart and check it.

I had a starter motor rewound on one of my bikes,It work good after that and another 8000 miles when I sold it.
