Title: Piston slap/noise at 15000 miles
Post by s40newbie on 04/30/10 at 10:22:40

Hi

Ive had my LS650 back from the garage to do fork seals and the mechanic told me that theres some noise/piston slap going on.
I had the cam adjuster checked about 2 years ago.

Should i take it back to get the cam checked out again as the guy mentioned the chain could be worn?

No, you should grab a cardboard box & poke the bolts into a pattern of the clutch cover shape to keep them in order & hack out a gasket & have a look yourself.

Well is that 1000 miles in 2 years?  or what?

Do you have a feeling for where the noise is coming from?

Up top would be valves
next to the oil filter would be cam chain adjuster
bottom of cylinder? piston

here's a story...

Here, chew on this here thought a bit if your valve adjustment doesn't make your knocky sound go away.

Stick (lightly jam) your finger into the hole in the middle of the cam and feel what sort of level of damage has taken place by moving the cam back & forth (up down) with your stuck-in-place finger.  We are mainly interested in "shake" -- motions in line with the valve action.

Plonka plonka, ain't it?  Generally it is a linear displacement of the cam down into the head by about .010" or so and boy you sure can feel it and see it and HEAR it.   Imagine that going on 4,000 times a minute as the cam slammed around in that gap.  Ugly to think about, but that was your nasty head knocking sound.

Just sit there and play with it and get a notion of what went on and get a feel for how you are going to have to shave the cover half to recover the slop.  Make a mental image of what has to move where to make it go away.

:o   eeeeek !!

OF... you meanie, very few people can stick their finger in that hole.
usually there's a plug there, and you gotta take the head cover off to get at it.

Durn, there you go again, jest a stickin' yer finger where it don't properly belong.

Shame on me.   Gotta keep my hands to myself, I do ....

However, mean as it may be I can't think of another knock sound that can come from the top end that doesn't go away if the valves are properly adjusted.

And I surely do regret what's gonna happen if he takes it back to that mechanic to get him to stick his finger in the hole ----

eeeeek !!     Ouchie ouchie ouchie !!  :o    :-[

Mechanics have very rough greasy fingers and they charge a whole lot to be sticking them anywhere like that ....

Hey, I did think of another knock sound from up top.

Tighten up your upper motor mount

(and the three lower ones too)

Adjust your valves.

Only then worry about Mr. Finger  (no ouchie this way)

Agreed especially in the UK.. even if i went in to get them to take a look at it your talking £35 just to find out "what it really is" and 5 times that to fix it..

We believe around here that you can be your own mechanic.

We can teach you to have your own greasy fingers ....
