Title: New build
Post by buggs on 04/28/10 at 02:48:02

http://p1.bikepics.com/pics/2010%5C04%5C06%5Cbikepics-1944963-200.jpg I pick up a used savage, with the intent to build a bobber, here is what I started with a 99 with 12500 miles, got a great deal it was scheduled for the scrap yard paid $425. This will be my first bike and build, I have been reading a lot on your site, getting a bunch of ideas

$425!!!!! :o  What a score!

These bikes are so clean and simple they make AWESOME bobbers. Good luck w/ the project. Keep us posted.

A good score indeed! :o  Pretty low miles for something destined for the scrap yard.  Does it run, anything wrong with it? :-?
Inquiring minds wanna know! :D

Oh and btw my build is going to resume shortly.I'm going to build the roller then just put the '86 engine in it for now.The '86 is needin' some attention anyway. My Harley frame should be back from sandblasting soon, and I'll paint it,and the '87 Savage frame at the same time.

That was quick. Goes to show you how simple these bikes are.

Title: Re: New build
Post by buggs on 04/28/10 at 10:35:37

John_D the bike does run, needed a new frame, not sure what happened, but got a great deal on a used one.

Title: Re: New build
Post by groupus on 04/28/10 at 18:14:07

jesus, that was quick! any idea what you're going to do to it, other than just a bobber? ie: hardtail, apehangers, chopping? etc.

ps. selling those parts in the marketplace will probably pay for the cost of the bike in no time

Title: Re: New build
Post by buggs on 04/29/10 at 02:24:08

The plan as of right now is to build custom rear fender to mount off the swing arm, chop the front fender down to nothing, remove the air box and battery (doing the mini battery install) cone filter,  painting the rims red with black spokes, need to widen the handle bars about 6" with 3" risers, and a solo seat.

Post by Edgar on 05/01/10 at 01:36:57

I just bought my 86 savage on thursday and man am i jealous of the deal you got!!! Im planning on bobbing mine too, i was wondering if the rear fender just bolts off??? I took a quick glance and thought it was welded to the frame.....

Title: Re: New build
Post by buggs on 05/01/10 at 01:56:50

The rear fender does just bolt on.  I believe is was just 4 bolts

Can't wait to see those rims!  Did you stick with the stock 15" on the rear or are you going with a 16"?  Belt or chain conversion???

Good luck to ya buddy!!!

Title: Re: New build
Post by John_D FSO on 05/05/10 at 17:36:02

I'm also looking forward to seeing how the rims look.  Wide white's for tires? :-?  Because that'd looke awesome! :o  Can't wait to see how the rest of it turns out.

Title: Re: New build
Post by buggs on 05/05/10 at 18:08:10

I stayed with the standard rims and tires for the time, trying to keep the build under 1000. always next year to keep the mods coming.  For the being of time sticking with the belt drive ( but I do like the chain conversion that i have seen on the site).

Title: Re: New build
Post by Chief Gunner on 05/05/10 at 18:38:18

Understand the $$ limitations. I think all of us have ran into that a time or 20.
Looking at the rims you already have done has me wishing I had done mine when I had the frame and fenders done. Can't wait to see the finished product on those wheels.
How time consuming to you think it will be getting all the spokes back in right. Never tried it myself, would even touch them on a bike as a kid. But I'd love to clean mine up, darn near impossible to get 23 years of crud off them while they are installed.

Nice, I pick up my rims from the Powder coater tomorrow. I went with ALL red though, thought it would mix it up a bit. I have Most everything else black so why not. Great job so far though!!!

Title: Re: New build
Post by groupus on 05/06/10 at 20:33:01

this build is coming alone real well and looks like its gonna be a snazzy bike. i'm a little jealous  ;D

what kind of rear fender do you have there? it looks like a plastic trailer fender, maybe?

Title: Re: New build
Post by buggs on 05/07/10 at 02:18:07

Groupus the rear fender was 2 metal trailer fenders split in half welded back together with 2 pcs of 3/8" bar bent to match the radius of the fender with a mounting plate to attach to the swing arm.

Hold Control down & punch the + button a few times, everything gets bigger.

When I upload the pics to photobucket they always come out huge on the post

Title: Re: New build
Post by babyhog on 06/30/10 at 05:22:29

Photobucket has an easy "resize" feature.  But if the camera you took the photo with is low megapixels, it will be distorted if you enlarge it very much.

How do you do that with the photo's ?
Getting multiple's on the page like that ?

Your red wheels are my favorite part of the bike.

Post by jef.savage on 07/01/10 at 03:22:57

You will get different sized pics depending on if you right click the thumbnail or open the pic first and then right click it.  Lancer, the multiple pics happens if the pics are small enough with no carriage returns between them.

Title: Re: New build
Post by babyhog on 07/02/10 at 09:30:42

I love the red.  Not too much, just in the right places.  Nice touch on the signal stems.  That thing has gotta look super sweet riding down the road.

Speaking of little details, are those bullets where the passenger pegs were?

Title: Re: New build
Post by buttgoat1 on 07/02/10 at 09:57:28

I like the way you laced the rims
did you do it your self?
Did you get the wheels dechromed before coating?
how much did the powdercoating run?

Title: Re: New build
Post by buggs on 07/02/10 at 14:07:34

Yes those are 357 hollow points in speed loaders, my father was police officer and when he passed away I wanted to something with them I think I found the correct place to put them.

I did lace the wheels my self, then sent them out to be trued and balanced when they mounted the tires.

The rims were blasted by my powdercoater, they ran me around 150.00

The turn signals are mounted on 12 guage shotgun shells, thought the red would look nice.

Nice build Buggs. I love the red rims and your bike is going to be turning alot of heads. Be prepared to answer alot of questions from others as they see your bike. Caution, you may want to have some paper towels handy for when they start drooling.. ;) Kim
