Title: Timing chain replacement and Sally goes SPLAT!
Post by PipJones on 04/23/10 at 13:24:50

Replaced my timing chain today and when i went to crank her up in stead of hearing whomp whomp... whomp whomp..... boom!!!! i heard whooooooooooooooow whoooooooooooooow, i.e. no compression. anyhow, removed what was neccessary to look at valves and nothing was damaged. i just don't have her in time. I see the timing marks on the cam sprocket but where are they on the crankshaft???? i saw a dot on the lower timing chain sproket (the one that sits on the crank) but that one can come off the splined crankshaft...... so i don't know what that's about.

Are the timing marks on the stater side?? or am i missing something. I def need to get this done in a hurry cuz its BEEN riding season.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Set the crank on TDC as seen in the "how to adjust your valves" post.
set the cam with the marks horizontal and the alignment pin at 1 o'clock.

Is it just my computer or is that link broken. Every time I try to click on it from the TOC list, it kicks me to the "forum" page where you can select rubber side down,  tech doc, etc.

If he's talking about incorrectly timing the chain on the cam sprocket that's a different case of OOOPS.

Go here and have a look at installing/timing the chain vs sprocket vs all the other alignment elements that are needed .....
