Title: How fast can stock savage go?
Post by Tiefighterpilot on 04/18/10 at 15:58:20

Took my s40 on freeway today for the first time. Hit about 60. I was on fifth and engine was reved up high.  I could feel the vibration of the engine on the handlebar.  If I try to go faster, would it strain the engine?  Will I hurt my savage by going faster?

How fast have you taken your stock savage?

I've had mine up to 85, the previous owner said he had it up to 95, they can go just fine in stock shape, yes you feel the vibes but they are "good vibrations" right  ;D

It may sound like that you are taxing the engine at 60mph but you really ain't. In stock configuration the top speed on these bikes is usually 85+.

It is revving high because its geared low.

red line is 6500 rpm, you can't get there except in 1st.

5th gear, 6500 rpm is about 100 mph.
I've done 95, uphill with a quicksilver carb.
stock engine with supertrapp, I normally go uphill at 85ish.

Post by SmilinLDR on 04/18/10 at 17:24:26

I've managed 90 but there was nothing left after that. Could be the altitude that shorted it on breath and missed the 95mph that many have reported.

I actually made it to 100 about a week or so ago, but the FireLizard ain't stock.

At 60mph, you're doing about 4,000 rpms...
It goes to 6500rpms...

You can go 90 in 4th gear... without redlining the engine...

How fast can a stock Savage go....... 135 mph

with a tail wind...... in a hurricane  ;D

On a local four lane, I was with a group of bikes and we came on a slow moving car.  The others took off to pass the guy, so I gunned it. I had it  thru 85 before I realized it.

My s40 was stock with a tcat fork brace. I had it up to 85 mph easily. Really didn't need or want to go any faster.

Fact,?......we have a better chance of doing 90 in 4th than 5th
Fact,?....... the engine flat runs outta hp around 90 in 5th gear

So then, why on gods green earth do some want a higher final gear?

Very true Routy,...  but most don't want it for a higher top speed,... just for a lower Rpm cruise at 70 mph...
The bike don't mind going 70,... people just like the lazy sound of runnin' lower Rpm's...

You want a final higher gear so it don't sound like your in 3rd gear, Or the motor doesn't sound like your doing 100mph and your only going 60mph .How many cars today will redline in high gear.

my '96 would do 85 uphill (it's a hill I travel daily, it's steep enough to make truckers cry)
OK I did rejet and have a supertrapp on.
And confirmed speed with a veypor vr1

Yes,  lazy sounds nice.  Reving high at 60 sounded like my engine was working too hard.

Speaking of wanting a higher final gear,......
If we're fresh outta horsepower at 85, I'm sure we don't have a lot of reserve power at 60, especially at only 4,000 R's.
Now if we raise the gearing,..... drop those R's to 3500 or less, we won't have any reserve power, and we will be taxing the engine, and wondering why the pipes are turning blue w/ just a little headwind,....ya think?

Why anyone would think 4,000 R's at 60 mph, is reving too high, I don't understand. I remember the days ridin those hi revin short stroke twins that you had to rev to 10,000 to get anything out of them. At 60 mph I think the gearing is perfect for crusin. The factory engineers didn't gear it that way because they are stupid.

But now if we bump the HP up to 50-60, yeah, we mite used a little taller gear.

Title: Re: How fast can stock savage go?
Post by RTC on 04/18/10 at 21:27:44

i routinely travel at a constant 65 mph on my way to work. i have found that for my bike, this is a perfect highway cruising speed. there is virtually no vibration. if i drop down to 60 in 5th, the vibration tickles my foot and makes it twitch :). i try to maintain the speed limit at all times but have many times found myself above 70. i have go at least 85 on the bike if not higher when passing but my body doesn't like that speed. the bike is fine with it. also the wind here in el paso can take a toll. i tend to think that going above 80 on a motorcycle is ridiculous and if you do that on a regular basis, you are asking for trouble eventually. we have had at least four deaths in el paso this month and all were due primarily to excess speed.....i'm good at 65

If your geared higher  and need more power you just shift to 4th gear,I had a Suzuki GR650 gear a 1000 rpm less than stock and really loved it.And It would still pull from 40 mph in high gear,It was a torquey engine like the S40.

92 mph in 5th with nothing more to give. Checked by a staionary speed trap with digital display. 95.4 mph checked on the runway of a local military base, I won't name which one as it wasn't very 'legal'. Leaning down as low as I could with a 3mph cross wind from the east as I headed S-SE. Very light on the front end too. I'm gonna put a little heavier oil in he forks and put a narrowr front tire on and slip on a 16" in the rear. I'm betting with that and some carb/exhaust tuning-100mph easy.....

dude, my pos 1997 Yamaha SR 125cc goes exactly
65mph if I duck my head  :D you have a savage!!!
...if the road permits, have some fun & go for it!

I've done 85mph on a savage for hours at a time,
does not hurt them, just monitor your oil before
and after runs like these, some savages will "eat"
a bit of oil at high speeds   ...onom nom nom.

...yours vibrates?   whaaat?   :o

The best my '02 could do stock was 85-87mph with no windshield. With a rejet, opened exhaust, a small wind screen and some other tinkering I've seen 95mph twice. I'm shooting for the ton mark but think that I will need to put a stage one cam in to get there.

Title: Re: How fast can stock savage go?
Post by Truckinduc on 04/19/10 at 17:40:49

I know ive broken 95 at times.    Stock gearing

I walked a Honda civic that indicated an accurate 90 mph through some back roads. Never once had it on the highway.

This is without going over 2/3 throttle cause my carb is not set up right.

Full exhaust, straight through muffler, ported exhaust runners, 40mm flat slide carb.

Title: Re: How fast can stock savage go?
Post by John_D FSO on 04/19/10 at 22:32:16

I had mine around 90 mph indicated, with a little throttle left.  Dunno if the extra throttle would've got me more speed, since I ran out of nerve. ;D  That was with a Dyna muffler, and around 1/2 a white spacer's worth of washers, and my chin on the bars. :D

Oh, and 200+ lbs of me... :P

apples and oranges man; a high reving short stroke multi-cyl 2 stroke is totally different than a long stroke big single.

There is just no comparison to the torque made by a long stroke big single...I love it.

95.9 mph on GPS, speedo was pretty accurate with my worn out stock tire.  I believe I can break 100 mph as I've had the speedo showing 103 on a day with good air.  Taller tire will go on to help with the mission.

Stock Bike (see sig)

After riding the back roads far from home I took the I-5 back home. I don't normally go over 70mph when cruising, but the weather was nice and I was pumped from the backroads, before I knew it I was around 83mph and passing everything. :D  RPMs were around 5000-5250 and she still had more to give as I passed big rigs and small eco-cars.

I "cruised" home averaging about 80mph. I though she would drink more fuel at that speed for almost an hour, but nope same as normal.

Oh, my new tires (thread http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1267116732/25#25) have been absolutely fantastic. Don't skimp on the rubber, get great tires and you will enjoy your ride more.

Motorcycle speedos are often and notoriously optimistic. I've had them read 10% higher than actual (against a GPS). I've taken my daughter's stock Savage to 85 indicated. It was stable, but I was probably doing 77.

Title: Re: How fast can stock savage go?

I have checked my stock '07 against both mileposts and a GPS, and it is within a mile or so of correct at speeds up to 65 mph. I have not checked it at higher speeds. By the way, that is with the OEM IRC tire, much maligned by some. I replaced the original IRC with another, simply because the speedometer (and odometer) both are accurate using that tire.

I got my stock '08 up to 87 indicated before my PPF kicked in. (Personal Pucker Factor) As others have already mentioned, it starts to feel a little light in the front end at those speeds. Still had throttle left though.

I take mine on the highway all the time, get to 125km/hr no problem (sorry I am canadian, I guess that is about 100mph).....just don't be so quick to get it into 5th and it still has a bit of acceleration when you kick it into 5th....nothing you can do about the vibrations, but hold on tight:)

125 kph (kilometers per hour) is 75 mph (miles per hour) -- the conversion is to multiply by 0.6. Sorry, there, to poster newcruiserRIDR, but 125 kph is not even close to the ton (100 mph).

Hi Bill

Sorry for such a delayed reply.....Yes! my s40 brand new and is stock except for the hartmann mod to the muffler.....
In an other post I initiated...."soot when blipped" i have said that my bike soots when it is blipped(even when warm) to me it seems that its rich. I say this because when the throttle is blipped I see soot which means that there is vacuum in the carburetor and not enough air comes in as fuel is sucked......it DAHHHH's on decleration and phuffs randomly during gear changes......I have done 93 mph sitting straight the front end felt light and there was a buzz in the handles....it got to 85 mph immediately and then the remaining 8mph followed somewhat slowly.....
I think the factory might have changed jets....could they???
I will try it this week end without the airfilter to see whether the soot vanishes/dwindles or remains there.....

it does 85-90 with no problem but i do not like what the motor sounds like over 90
