Title: My first mechanical success!!!
Post by RTC on 03/29/10 at 21:15:10

I ran my battery dead the other day so i took it off to charge it and since it would take a day to charge i decided to take my tank off for the first time. then my head plug cap magically appeared in the mail so i decided to go for it. it took a little longer than i had hoped but i really had no expectations i guess, just wanted to do it right and get things cleaned up in there real well. i replaced the old head plug, which was definently the source of my leak and replaced the spark plug for good measure..although it looked great. new gasket and bolted it back up. 100 miles later an no leaks!

while i had the tank off i took of the speedo springs one at a time and cleaned them and then put them back on with some black rtv swirled around where they meet the mount. no more speedo rattle! now i can hear the headlight loud and clear.

yeah i have never even used a torque wrench before.. so needless to say i am fairly proud of myself and my confindence level of working on this thing has been boulstered. it's funny, i have a lot of friends who make fun of this bike for it's size but they couldnt even tell me where the carb was on their bikes! haha

on the reserve matter... has anyone ridden this out in mileage?

If you figure on gas every hundred miles you will be fine. Just in case bring a rope, and they can pull you along.

I figured that res was approximately 20 the one time I had to run it for awhile before gas station.

a length of hose is useful if you run out of fuel so you can syphon some of there tank :)

I can't remember, I did check it one time though.  It seems like it was not quite as much with the stock petcock.  I usually get gas every 100 miles and never have to go to reserve.  I do switch over every once in a while to make sure it still works ;)

For good measure, when I head out on longer rides I pack an old liquid gas camping stove bottle filled with extra gas. It's only about a liter, but will get you that much further when you need it.   ;)
