Title: bike will not start, need help
Post by wolfmrp on 03/29/10 at 11:59:30

I installed a vn 750 tank this past weekend and was able to ride the bike for 2 days after that.  I tried starting the bike this morning and it would not turn over.  I hear it trying but get no "thump thump".  I thought it might be the battery ( I have mini battery mod) so I strapped on a full sized, fully charged battery and tried it.  It defiantly had enough juice but I got the same results.

This is my thinking.  I cleaned the tank out before I installed it but I am wandering if I did a good enough job.  Tomorrow I will have the bike towed (thanks to AAA)to the garage where I work on it and pull apart the carb.  Does my thinking seem logical? Any other suggestions?

so the motor turns over?
and no thumpa, not even one.

check for fire...
could you have pinched a wire putting the tank on?
knocked a lead loose?
I would take the tank off and inspect
the cover on the harness is not bullet proof.
or just make sure you got spark.

check for air...
filter not covered in gas or oil?
Didn't knock loose any of the ducting?

check for fuel...
check all the screens for crud.

If indeed it will not turn over, it is the battery, starter,  solenoid, or wiring inbetween that is the problem.

I pulled the plug and it was wet and a little dark. After drying it she fired right up. I was able to ride and re start the bike with no issues and figured I had just forgot to shut off the raptor petcock and flooded it. BUT then she died while sitting in stop and go traffic. The plug was dry but covered in carbon and the bike started after I cleaned it. That plug was only about 1000 miles old. I replaced the plug and leaned out the mixture screw a bit. I still don't trust her. Any ideas?

Sorry about any typos I sent this from my phone.

So you think the plug got wet from gas running into the carb & overflowing it & then into the open intake valve? So, naturally, you changed the oil, right?

I did not have time or enough oil yesterday.  I am changing it this morning.

I changed the oil this morning and it smelled a bit like gas.  I road around town putting about 30 miles on the bike.  Turned it on and off a few times during the day and did not seem to have any problems.  I am making sure I turn off the raptor every time I park.  Shouldn't to carb stop gas from free flowing in to the engine?  Could this be a symptom of another problem?

In your case, if the float valve is not dirty or stuck, it should stop the gas flow 100%.

Operative word there is Should. Penalty for it not operating as it Should?
Potentially, very high.

I think I will pull the carb this weekend and give it a good cleaning.

This may have been a blessing in disguise.  I was going to take a road trip and camp for spring break.  We have had nothing but rain and weather advisories all week.

Hold the needle valve  up to the light & see if theres a ring cut in it. The float needs to be set right, too. If you cant get it IGZaklee right, set it a tad low.
