Title: Finished,.....Pics Added 6 inch Forward Controls ?
Post by Routy on 03/25/10 at 05:16:21

Anyone have 6" forward controls ?
My 4" work great,....while at the same time making me wonder why some 6"ers wouldn't be better yet.
I had just enough 3/8 material left over from the 4" to make some 6" plates, and I now have them cut out. Still laying them out, I can see a little problem w/ the shift linkage dragging the frame, but I think I can remedy that by raising the shift pedal a 1/2". The right side looks to not be a problem. I'll see how it goes.
Really, ?..... after the vacuum gauge idea went south, I just needed another project ! ;D

No, not for a shift indicator anyway. It has only 10 inches at dead idle, and when under even light load, it is down to 3-5 inches. Anything over 60-70 it had only 1-2 inches. And at 50-60 I no difference in the top 3 gears.
When cobbing it at 70, I don't know what is keeping the fuel valve open,....sure can't be vacuum,........except maybe 1 inch or so.

But I left it on,....looks kinda important anyway.

Looks good and I like the crossbrace. How does it feel?

Fantastic ! Being a 6 ft'er, it feels like the bike more fits me now.
It even seems like the seat is more comfortable.

The 4" was fine, but these 6" are just that much better.

Nice work on the foward controls!  You are a handy little booger, aren't you.  What's your next project??

And I don't think we saw you and your bike in the Cafe thread "Let's see you and your ride".  You should add these to that thread...    ;)

Hey, Routy, looks good.  Question:  would ya wanna sell your 4" FCs?  Are they complete and ready to install?  If so, how much?

You know, I never actually measured the forward controls I made, I just went by what felt right. But after looking at yours, I realized mine seemed to be about the same length. I just measured them, and you ain't gonna believe this, but mine are six inches right on the button. I guess six foot tall guys like us automatically end up with six inch forward controls whether we make them on purpose or accident.  :) :)

Would that mean with every foot you are tall you need an inch for your controls? Just a thought that has no basis in fact.  ;D ;) ;D

I think you have it figured out,...maybe ? :)
All I know for sure, is that they feel real good. But I don't think I'd want to go for any farther,....as I can see problems come up.

Yeah, like the front wheel hitting them if you stay with a stock front end.

Hey very nice job. One of the problems I had with my design when I went longer than  4 inches was that the kick stand would cause the plates to flex. Looking real good ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;)

Yeah Ed, where ya been,

That is one good thing about leaving the stand in its original location. But that make for a lot more work too, and causes other minor problems too, like the bolts end up on the short side, especially w/ 3/8 plates. And w/ the 4", the heel interferes w/ the kickstand mount a little too. But the 6" worked really good.

I may be interested, (getting tired of waiting on mechanic hubby to make me some :o) are they complete? If not what's missing? How much?

First of all, let it be known that I in no way want to be infringing on EdL's selling the 4" FCs. This would be a one time sale of a prototype used set,...that does differ from his. I...no way would build any FCs for sale.

price $40
They will bolt right on and fit perfectly, but any buyer deserves a couple details about them before sale.
For the details, just PM me.

Yeah, that's why I kept the kickstand in it's original location. Less flexing of the plates when resting. I didn't have the problem with short bolts though as I used 1/4 inch steel diamond plate.
