Title: Engine stutters and dies unless on prime
Post by Latimer on 03/21/10 at 08:34:58

Just brought my bike out for the first time this year.  Replaced spark, charged battery, and put some good fuel in and finally got it cranking.  I took it out for the first ride and I noticed that unless I had the petcock on Prime the bike would stutter and die after 30-60 seconds.  But if it started stuttering I would just switch it back over to Prime and it would run fine.  I've read over a few other threads and it sounds like the savage has this problem occasionally.  Any ideas?

Yes,... common to the Savage, and all bikes with vacuum actuated petcocks...
You probably have a loose or cracked vacuum line...
Right-side of carb going up to rear of petcock...
Make sure it's not cracked, and firmly attached at both ends... if it's lost it's pliability, replace it...

When running on prime,... you will have no reserve if you run out of gas...

Im an idiot.  I knocked the vac hose lose when I was moving the fuel tank.  Tightened it back up and it runs like a dream.

What makes us think that won't happen to you again any time soon ? ;)

Personally, I don't see why this isn't more of a problem at WOT.
Looking at a vacuum gauge, it doesn't have all that much vacuum to start w/, And under WOT, the gauge shows nothing. It must not take much vacuum to pull that petcock diaphram back.

When I see a problem "Suddenly appear" I go to the last place I touched, because Ive seen too many of these events be my own ding danged fault.
