Title: Wheel bearings

I have another question for you very knowledgeable S40 owners. How long do wheel bearings normally last?

Don't know, got 46k on one and 26k on another, neither replaced.

Roll the bike along in neutral, if you feel it lurching time for bearings

Lift the bike up and spin em too.  Feel for side to side wobble.

Heck I forgot about wobbling the tires. I do that on my boat trailer all the time to check the bearings. Thanks for the advice.

Right on,...easiest way to check wheel brgs, spin'm, they should be quiet,....maybe purr a little. If they "growl", it could be time to fix.

Same on boat trailers, grease first, then spin, they better not growl back !

Didn't think about the spokes.

loose spokes will give you an odd sound but won't cause lurching.
Should be discernable by lifting the wheel.

By listening for a strange sound?

If it spins freely, but clicks... loose spokes.
If it spins with lurches... bad bearings.
Lurches... odd jerky movements.
Lurch... an oversized butler.   ;D

Lurch = "sudden departure from a smooth trajectory"

Growl = bad bearings
;)

Whenever a wheel is off, consider that a great opportunity to check the wheel bearings.

I checked and am pretty sure the bearings are ok. Looks like I might need some front pads soon. Thanks for all of the input.
