Title: JIS driver search, not doomed to repeat
Post by photojoe on 03/09/10 at 10:08:01

I learned my lesson using phillips head screwdrivers on the Savage JIS screws, and don't want to repeat while changing my brake light switch (activated by front brake lever). I looked at the screws over the weekend, and they're small and seem as soft as carb screws, ie; easy to strip with the wrong drivers.

The JIS screwdrivers are not easy to come by, and after an hour of research, there seems to be two options; the Moody set, or the Hozan set. Moody doesn't get good reviews, but the Hozan set does. I was about to place an order for a set on the Ikas webshop site here: http://www.ikaswebshop.com/jisphilips.html but stopped in the middle of actually placing the order when I was unable to remove some items from the cart. The website just felt cheesy to me. Anyone ever use this company? Good or bad reviews?

It looks like neither Sears, JC Whitney or Harbor Freight sells JIS screwdrivers.

Id give Digger a holler. Thats the guy who first made the point( I think) about the JIS screws & hes got the drivers. Id bet he knows where he got them, what he paid, how long it took for them to get to him & exactly where they are at this moment.

Justin would be right.

I got all but one of my JIS screwdrivers here:

http://www.amessupply.com/products1.cfm?aid=1&cid=D&sid=DE&fid=1404070

Quality is good.

I got a #3 JIS screwdriver here:

http://www.mcmaster.com/#jis-(japanese-industrial-standard)-screwdrivers/=670nes

Quality is average.....but still good enough for working on a Savage.

IHTH!

Thanks Digger.

And Serobot, try and remember that sometimes it's best that things are coming out, not going in ;D.

I just went ahead and bought the 4-piece set #1 to #4 set from the McMaster's catalog link on the same page as the link provided by Digger. Not bad for about $15 and shipping. They seem to be of respectable quality for the price. Better than Craftsman screwdrivers, which I've come to detest over the years. (OTOH, there are some hand tools where I'll use only Craftsman.)

Since I do some electronic work on the side I had some vintage looking knobs and other stuff to order from their catalog and actually ended up saving so much on the hardware and electronics by buying in quantity from them, it was about like getting the screwdrivers for free.

Thanks for reminding me of that old supplier Digger. They're certainly worth shopping from in many circumstances.

Regards,
John

I bought a small impact screwdriver from Harbor Freight. I think it was 14.00. it is well made and it has worked on every screw I have tried it on so far.

I got the impact friver Johnboy mentioned.  It has worked great on most things.  Someone on here offer a trick that has wored for me a couple of times.

The impact would not budge the screws on the decomp thing on the head, maybe I gave up too soon.  (Here is the trick)  I took my cordless drill and put it on the lowest clutch setting and let it bump, turned it up a notch and tried it again.  Eventually that got the screw loose, I had already boogeres it up.  Be sure to hold the drill TIGHT against the screw.

Cool trick I learned here.

Placed an order for the same set as Rockin John.

I bought the Harbor Freight Impact Screwdriver last year, but it broke after a couple of uses.

Received mine today, and they seem to be built well. It's going to be nice removing screws without stripping them.

Thanks for the link Digger :)

FYI for any Canadian buyers out there McMasters won't ship to Canada.    >:(

Anybody offer to buy the 4 piece set for me and have it shipped to your place? I'll pay you via Paypal for the cost of the set, shipping to you, and to me +10%.

Yep, I like 'em.

Trouble is, whenever I need something specific from them, I feel obliged to pad the order to spread the shipping costs out a bit.

They've got lots of stuff you can't find anywhere else, though.

Now, the REAL challenge:

Does anyone know where a guy can buy JIS impact driver bits?  Specifically, numbers 1, 2, and 3?

Just hit that screw with that HF impact and it won't matter what it was, it's now whatever that driver is.

I wish I'd seen that before I just ruined a couple of JIS screws, using my usual trick of setting a Makita drill in reverse and letting its clutch "CLACK CLACK CLACK" the screw out.. but unfortunately I was using a regular #2.  I ground it to roughly the shape of a JIS bit, but it wasn't good enough.. ruined the screws in exactly 1/4 turn.

On Digger's advice I ordered an Ames Supply screwdriver.  Not the little stubby #2, a longer one.  The lady called me and said they do not stock it anymore, and there was some other problem with the order ($25 minimum?)  They may still have the JIS screwdriver sets though.

I ended up getting the one from "ikasweb" and it was delivered, despite the website quirks.

Nice find, crash.

I think I'll opt for the set just below the one you have pictured.  Not sure if they are classified as "impact bits," but they're most likely better that what I've got.

THANKS!    [smiley=thumbup.gif]

Well, so far, so good. I havent wrecked any JIS heads yet. I do plan on getting some bits & I think Id like to have both sets. The 1/4 electric impact is handy as heck & those long ones w/ the groove around them would fit in there just fine, but therd be no magnet. The smaller "insert" types, that go in a mag driver would be nice, too.
I still have SOme room in the screwdriver drawer..but it is getting a bit cramped in there.
