Title: Having issues after a long winter
Post by shermeco on 03/09/10 at 07:34:51

Well winter is finally over and i want to go ride again!
Over the winter I bought at cone air filter and re jetted the carb with lancers jets.
Now I can get the bike started and running but it will not idle long and when i try to ride it the low end is very sputtery. also when i rev the engine real hard it will back fire and throw flames from the exhaust? any ideas on how to get back to running smoothly again would be great.

I am curious, how did it run before ?

Ran fine before I took it off the road for the winter and did the few mods I also have a stock header with a sportster muffler attached

New Spark plug and the gas I put fresh gas in the tank then emptied the tank because it was rusty. then put new gas in again.

Just started her up and was really hard to start as well and if i keep the throttle on at low rpm it stutters

Put it back to stock and see if it runs as it should. Then make ONE modification at a time and note the results. That way you might be able to figure out the best setup. Changing more than one thing at a time is usually a road to trouble.

Since you say there is rust in the gas tank, put an in-line fuel filter between the petcock and the carburetor.

Fuel filter is in place going to put new gas in it now let you know the results

Charon's got your problem, if you have a rusty tank you just put some rust flakes into your jets & passages -- go get you an in line gas filter and clean out the jets & passages in your carb and see if your issues don't disappear.

Always always have a fuel filter installed on your Savage -- the bikes were not designed to use alcohol fuel mixes and they have ZERO rust preventative plastic layers in the gas tank, etc.

Alcohol is in most regular gas nowadays -- it causes corrosion in unlined steel gas tanks.

new gas and seams to still be idling hard but stays running much better. she she backfires after i rev  her and spitting flames out the back

Put some Sea Foam in the gas it should clear it up.

Ouch !
Rust in tank
minus no fuel filter = clean carb !

BTW, wheres the fuel filter ? Mine don't have one either ?

Seems like I seen one on the petcock,....but if I remember right, it
wouldn't do much more than keep butterflies out.
I think I'll put a finer one inline.

so i was digging around in the carb and realized that the spring that is suppose to be where the white spacer is missing how important is that spring?

Ive left screws out of things & they still work, but springs arent generally optional.

Ah, you'll be ok.
Add an once of seafoam to the tank
I'd find that spring and get it in there.
most likely causing uneven running.
and sounds like you need to adjust idle.
or do you know how many turns out are you?

Not sure how many turns right at the moment been messing with it so much i need to re do all of that.
Just ordered a new spring and I'm going to put a few washers in place where the white spacer used to be for good measure. I dont know where i read to just take the spacer out all together and put nothing in its place

The stock washer is 0.110" thick.

In your case, leaving it out will make it worse.
