Title: two noob questions-cleaning engine & broken bolt
Post by RTC on 03/04/10 at 19:05:09

what is the best way to clean the engine of my bike without tearing it apart. i basically just want to make it look pretty. can i spray water on it? what parts do i need to watch out for?
second, does anyone have a good method for removing a bolt that is broken off in it's hole? why would they put such weak bolts o the bike?

The most effective method I have found for removing broken bolts is to use a Dremel tool with cutting disk, making a slot across the ragged end of the bolt, and using a screwdriver in the slot to turn the bolt out.

the bolt is the bottom of the three on the drive pulley/sprocket cover.

Then pull the other 2, drop the cover & see if theres something you can grab with pliers.

he he those are fun

corroded in place?  lock-tite or just twisted off?

twisted off is easiest... left handed drill, or easy out

Lock-tite... apply heat to burn out the glue, then easy out.

corroded?  penetraitin' oil, then easy out.

The term "Easy Out" is just a term for a way to remove a busted bolt. Its rarely easy. Sometimes, they just dont wanna come out. Heat, vibration, quick temperature changes, penetrating oil all help, but if you can get a left hand drill going down it, & stay outta the threads, youll be way ahead.Wintergreen oil is great.

the bolt was broken while i was trying to give my new-old bike a "sponge bath" after i cleaned and lubricated the area i went to put the cover back on and wrenched a tad too hard. it really didnt feel that hard to me but it did to the bolt, i guess. i used to be a carpenter before i joined the army and i was gonna try an old carpenter trick but it's much easier with a screw in wood. but yeah the cc drilling should work. thats pretty much what i was imagining. i've honestly never heard of the screw extractor kit but i am super cheap and would rather buy a drill bit...actually i think i may have one already

it's cool because this was pretty much the first time i took a wrench to a motorcycle :-/ it was a little discouraging because i was gung-ho to learn to work on this bike but opefully this is just the first thing to be learned :)

I like Castrol Super Clean.  It really cuts crud.  Also works good on bathtub ring and getting a grease stain out of clothes.  Keep it off your hands, it pulls all the oil out of your skin.  If you do, just rub on a little Vaseline.  It is not a petroleum base. Right now it is on sale at WalMart $7 gallon.

is there any mechanical part of the bike that i really want to avoid getting water on?

Is there any mechanical part that doesn't get wet when it rains? Just try to avoid spraying too much water up under the fuel tank where the electrics live. If you use a power washer, avoid the switches on the handlebars and the grease seals on the wheel bearings.
