Title: Fuel air mixture
Post by h20skier on 03/01/10 at 07:57:07

I made a mistake adjusting my idle speed with the fuel air mixture screw. Does anyone know how to set it to the correct mixture. I have been told by a couple of mechanics that they do it by sound.

Without an exhaust analyzer, your ears are the tool... turn in 'till the idle drops,.. turn out 'ill the engine either lugs or stops increasing,... then set it in between...
If that don't work for you, just set it 1 1/2 turns out from closed and see how it runs...

Serowbot is it closed when the screw is almost all the way out?

Closed is in, clockwise... leanest setting,......

Out gets richer...counter clockwise...

Thanks the 1 1/2 turns from closed was suggested by someone else too. I think I will try that first.

close that with a gentle hand. That thing is a tiny little needle on the end & will "booger up" with very little effort.

From the horror stories I've read about that air screw, I can't believe I was lucky enough to not have to touch it,.....fact is, I've never seen it, ....and don't want to ! :) But I feel for those that have had problems w/ it.

Not really a problem to be feared of.
But if you're a klutz, leave it be.

I think a better idea is,...if it don't need adjusting, don't adjust it. Don't try to correct anything much above a fast  idle by turning a screw that is not going to have much if any effect on it.

Justin, I already tightened it down pretty good, backed off 1 1/2 turns and it seems to be running well. I guess if I "boogered" the end it probably wouldn't run very well? Wish I had seen your post earlier.
