Looking at a 98 savage that has been sitting for a few years.
What do I look for and what will need replaced because of sitting for so long?  ::)

Check for rust, especially inside the tank,... may need cleaning and recoating... or replaced...

tire cracks,... dead battery,... and carb rebuild... are a definite...

Make sure it will turn over, and check for compression,... You'll need to get oil up to the rings, or squirt a little into the spark plug hole to get compression...

also spin the wheels, and work the forks to see that the bearings aren't seized... fork seals may be dried out too...

Booger, huh?... :-?

Resurrecting the dead is always a labour intensive job but the rewards are pride in ownership and knowing a lot more about how to care for your bike.
Before starting it for the first time, remove the spark plug so that there is no compression, and spin the engine over about a dozen times to get oil into the passages and a little on the rings by squirting about a teaspoon into the spark plug hole before spinning it.
Then put the plug back in and choke i with the petc0ck on prime.
If you have cleaned the carb, changed the oil and checked the electrics and found that all is well it should start right up.
Let it run fore about two minutes and shut it off and check the oil level.

pull the petcock..tear down and r&r...
replace ALL the hoses from the pet thingy to the carb and the 2 vent tubes.
sea foam the tank x2...
if you are lucky u dont have to over haul the carb..
