Title: Just bought my first bike...
Post by discobandit on 02/23/10 at 00:30:37

Hi Everyone,

I just bought my first bike, and wouldn't you know, its a Yellow 1996 Savage with 2600 miles.  The previous owner called it the Nuclear Banana, but I'm fond of Blondie myself.

Nice to meet you all, and I look forward to your guidance and knowledge in the months to come!

Discobandit

That is in great condidtion for a '96, and with just 2600 on the clock it is a great find.
My bike, REX, started life in '96 with the same yellow paint.
It has changed a bit since then though.

Welcome to the Savage World

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone!  Took my first run on the street today.  This is going to take me a bit yo get used to!  So I forgot to engage the clutch when shifting a few times... How much damage am I doing to my bike?

Also, how do you know when to shift since it lacks a tach?

If you're really unsure of yourself, get a cheap tach.
before it craps out you'll have audio rpm reference.

basically, shift down to very fast idle.
fast idle is when the choke is pulled out half way and the engine is warm.
very fast idle is a bit more than that.    [smiley=lolk.gif]

Welcome!  That's a CLEAN looking bike, you lucky dog.  Congrats on the find.

As for the shifting, I reckon that with some time on the bike, you'll start to "feel" where the right shift areas are.  That's what I did, and I don't think I'm too far off (I think :-?) most of the time.  As far as shifting without the clutch, I believe some here do it on a regular basis, and the trans have survived so far.

as far as shifting...it'll rev to an uncomfortable point and power will drop off well before you hit redline. Id be more conerned about lugging the engine than worrying too much about shift points but heres a good general reference until you get the feel for it.
1st - 0-20
2nd- 20-35
3rd- 35-45
4th- 45-60
5th- 60 +
As far as clutchless shifting. Some here do it regularly but they also know how to match engine speed with road speed in a given gear. If you're drastically off its possible to cause some damage though Ive never heard of it happening. If you're iffy about using the clutch Id suggest taking the motorcycle safety course available at many community colleges. Here in PA its free if you have a DL. Some places it costs money. Either way its worth it.

just a note...it is possible to make 60 mph just after hitting 2nd gear   :)
well, let me qualify that a little; after a few tweaks and mod's it will do that   8-)

Only a few? :-? ;D
I've hit 60 in 3rd on my almost stock ride, when merging with fast traffic, and she's starting to scream pretty good with that more open exhaust. :D

Nice looking banana.. I hope you have many many miles of happy adventures. Watch out as no matter the color it seems you are invisible to most. Keep your eyes on your surroundings. Expect the unexpected..

The bike has a constant mesh tranny so as long as you left off the gas a bit you didn't do much if any damamge.   Matter of fact, it's a good skill to learn.

If you haven't already, take the safety course!!!!!

Oh yea... purdy bike....
