I stripped the head on one of the carb spacer screws. I want to drill the screw out and replace it with a larger threaded screw so I can do the spacer mod.

Any thoughts?

i personally suggest getting needle nose pliers or vice grips and trying to get it out that way. Once you get it out you can either get another screw from the hardware store if you can find a match or take a dremel to the head and make it a flat head.

If you end up having to drill, I'd try it using left-hand drill bits. You may get lucky.

not sure what screw you re talkin about ..but "easy outs" have saved my bacon many times...the larger the screw the greater the success
if you fail may be time to get a hold of lancer for a carb upgrade..(after his move and the snow clears!!)

I have never had very good luck with Easy Outs. The broken screw has to be drilled to get the Easy Out to work, and it is difficult to keep the drill bit centered on the usually irregular broken screw. If the drill isn't centered, it is mighty easy to drill the hole partly in the screw and partly in the screw hole. The idea behind using a left-hand drill bit is that it will tend to turn the screw in the "loosening" direction as the hole is drilled, and with any luck will "grab" the screw and unscrew it for you.

In this case, the screw under discussion is inside the carburetor slide, at the bottom of a fairly deep and fairly narrow well. It might be difficult to find a drill bit both small enough to do the job and long enough to reach. There really isn't enough room for the drill chuck to make a straight shot.

I have a very small impact driver I got at Harbor Freight. It is not Craftsman tool quality of course but it serves its purpose. It easily gets into the slide well and the small phillips head that is included fits the tiny screws perfectly. It makes life much easier.

See the long skinny phillips bit ?

The little impact driver is the best idea,.....if you can have the screw on something solid enough so the driver will work as intended.

If that fails, remember if you can grind (or drill) the head of the screw off, the screw itself will then be free. So then once the retainer is off, there should be enough of the screw sticking out to get a hold of it and easily turn it out.
Drilling a screw that small would be my last resort,un less it was to drill the head off the screw w/ a larger bit.

As others have already said, the easy out method may not be the best but it can work. I also stripped the head on one of my spacer screws. I was able to buy an extra long drill bit at the local hardware store to carefully drill the right size hole in the screw and then used a small easy out to remove the screw. This hardware store had allen head screw replasements to make the job easier next time.
