Title: Help for a friend
Post by Savage_Amusement on 02/05/10 at 08:54:02

A guy I met off Craigslist has a 1986 Savage and sent me a message. He was looking for a bike mechanic for his carb. This is what he sent.

"I think the floats are sticking as I am getting fuel backing up thru the vent tubes. Likely, a thorough cleaning would fix it. My problem is two-fold: I don't know what i'm doing (though I do have the clymer's manual). Secondly, my schedule is so packed right now, I don't have much time."

I swear I remember someone talking about this very thing on here, I just couldn't find it in the search. Any and all help is much appreciated!!

well...
maybe the float doesn't float (a hole or a crack),
or it gets stuck at the pivot point,
or the thin sheet metal bracket is warped, bent or cracked (forced assembly will do it)
or it all works but the needle valve seat is dirty.

That's all I can think of right now. Check all four.

Older bike, also suspect the Petcock diaphram gone bad.

Easy check, tell him to put the petcock lever to PRI and see if the flow stops.

ALSO, make sure you tell him to drain and replace the oil after it's fixed.
