Title: Battery
Post by rl153 on 02/04/10 at 10:54:37

I had my battery on a float charger for a couple months. It read 12.9 volts, right off the charger . After the discussion here ,I removed it from the charger and it read 12.6 volts the next day .Now a week later off the charger ,it reads 12.1 volts .Is this a normal drop ,or an indication of a defect? Thanks.

Charge your battery at 2 amps then see what happens.

Yes it does.  you don't want to contaminate the battery with minerals.

The water is at the correct level.

Then play taps and get a new one.

Oh well, I think I killed it leaving it on the float charger for 2 months . It shouldn't drop that low after 1 week ,right? Should I get another Yuasa ,or big crank ?Thanks.

The big crank battery has 190 cca ,while some of the other battery names have 210cca. how important is that?

In cars I always used the highest cca I could get should be better in bikes too.

Can you charge a new wet cell battery out of the box with a deltran battery tender jr,once you've added the acid? Also when you measure a batteries length ,does that include the vent tube?

Battery tender won't overcharge in any case, so go ahead.

Battery dimensions won't include the vent tube.

A drop to 12.1 volts, equals "borrowed time",..... warrants a new battery.

Leaving a battery on a quality float charger 365 days a year will not only NOT hurt a battery,......its service life will normally be somewhat longer

Water ??
Distilled water is better of course, but remember, in a pinch any water is better than no water !

Is the battery still in the bike?  Could be normal drop-off depending  on the age of the battery.  How old is it?  I have a similar conditon with a Yuasa in a Honda Rebel and it still is ok.

I think if it drops to 12.1 volts in a week ,it's like 25% charged . I don't trust that . The battery is less than 2 years old . I'm going to go for the Big Crank,in about the end of march when I can start riding again .
