Title: Newbie
Post by FrankYoungWolf on 01/24/10 at 13:33:55

Hi guys stumbled upon the site while looking for another bike. Had a 86 Savage till an ole lady here in Ocala decided to drag me under her front bumper.  Finally talked my family into letting me get another and Savage was my first choice. Will be looking for the next coulpa weeks but will keep everyone updated and post some pics when I get mine. It will be nice to have a place to share my love for this wonderful bike with fellow Savage fans!! Look forward to many conversations and rides...Anyone in Central Fla. look me up would love to find some riding partners...

You definitely picked the right place to join. This site has more info and tech tips and mods for the Savage/S40 than anywhere else on the net. Heck, we even have more than the dealerships.

And before you ask when it comes time to post pics, this is how ya do it here. http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1240899665

Another thing, this is the back-up if this site goes down for maintenance or whatever.

Yea I have my eye on a really nice one in High Springs for about 1500.00 hoping that iy will still be there after I get my Taxes done and find a cheap vehicle for the wife. (have to find one for her first.) But the one I'm looking at is 1998 Suzuki Savage 650 - Candy orange customized paint with ghost skulls. Forward controls, new grips, HD muffler, re-jetted carb, saddlebags. 22,000 miles - Cool bike! More pics available if interested

Am crossing my fingers and saying a little prayer that this one will still be around. I'm supposed to be getting w-2's on 01/29/2010 so everyone send up some luck for me...LOL :D

Never did I figure how much riding again would make me so happy!!  ;D I actually rode home from work yesterday in the pouring rain. Had a guy pull up beside me in a truck at a red light and tell me he had straps if I wanted a dry ride home!! Still amazes me how cool fellow riders are. Like i tell everyone that asks me why I still ride after my crash, "it's a lifestyle not easily left behind!" Will post one more pic of me and the War pony on this  post and then move on to other postings. Thanx everyone for the awesome comments, I do feel like a Crow warrior who went into an enemies camp and walked out with their best Horse untouched!!

not to dampen your high spirits but pop off that right side cover and have a look at the chain tensioner. Its isnt real common to have an issue at that mileage but my tensioner was out 18mm at about 9k mi when I got mine used. First thing I did was order a modified tensioner from verslagen.

i have seen that said a bit here on the boards, however I'm afraid that I have no mechanical expertise at all when it comes to bkes, cars, or any thing. I'm actually about to go over and post a question on the main boards about adjusting my stock shocks to allow for more weight. I will have to follow up with the tensioner question as well it looks like. Thanx, for the heads up. 8-)

its really quite simple though a bit tedious as you've got to remove to right side peg to remove the exhaust to then remove the right side cover. The big thing to remember is that the bolts on the cover are all different lengths and some have rubber washers so they all need to go back where they came from.

One weekened when I have some time I will have to take my laptop out and walk thru the steps. Is there anyway to tell if this has been done already? ( other then asking the previous owner?)

Sorry, there's only a way of tellin' it's not been done.
When it stops with a sudden bang.   :o
Or get yourself a fiberoptic scope.   8-)

Have you looked through the tech/ref section yet? If not, there is a couple of how-to threads you can look at.

Definitely check that tensioner, you don't want this to happen to you like it did to me.

I lucked out when this happened to me, the timing stayed put and I was able to make it home from work. But as soon as I got up the next morning (luckily it was my day off) I pulled the cover and found that.

On a scale of 1 - 10, with ten being most of the guys on this board; I rate myself about a two and a half. Yet I did the VerSlavy mod on my tensioner just the other day, and it only took about 2 hours. Get a Clymers, and have your laptop in the garage logged in to this site, and you're good to go.

Congrats on your new ride! You did get a steal.

I am all weather rider too and it is the feeling of riding, not really the weather. I like the sun more than the rain, but here in the NW gotta roll with it.

Keep that bike upright and enjoy every minute you're on it.
