Title: Primary gear nut / Help
Post by retired on 01/19/10 at 16:55:42

I want to put on my new timing chain.  But I cant get this nut off the primary gear. The book said it is a left hand tread, comes off clockwise and to put a copper washer between the gear to hold it till you free the nut? Using a two foot breaker bar I still cant get the nut loose .Twice the copper washer passed through the gear, even doubled  pennies came through. This nut is tight. What can I do? This site said not to use an air tool . Help!

well I'm working on dropping my oil pan, just broke another bolt and dang I wish I'd put heat on it before it broke.

so I suggest clean off the oil in that area and torch it a little.  But I've never seen that nut myself.  Sounds like you need two pennies but they're not really copper anymore

There are better experts here than me,... so this a sorta' bump...
but,..
Can you get a nickel in there, or a fatter washer?...   I don't think you want to use an impact hammer or wrench on it, ... so I'd try to stay with the breaker bar,... get it in position and use your foot..
If you can get someone to sit on the bike and hold it steady, that might help...

The fact that your engine can eat a penny gots me worried.
I wouldn't put a nickle in there too hard, may break a tooth.
Savage greg used a chunk of aluminum.
clymers shows you feeding the penny in from the bottom, it that what you're doing?

Is a nickel harder than a penny?... I thought they were all made of zinc now...
Sorry, my mistake...

I used a piece of leather folded & an impact to bust that thing out. Is there a folded washer/retainer on that thing? I cant remember.

Had to use 2 pennies and even then they BARELY escaped getting eaten. That nut is a doosey for sure. Dont remember quite how i did it but I remember I spent 20 cents or so getting it done. Knowing myself, I either got it by trying over and over until it finally broke or I took a hammer to the end of the tourque wrench until I got it( I know, not a great idea). I did finally get it. Keep trying. Do NOT take it to a shop. You can get it done. Just keeping heaving on the bar and/or grab a hammer to wail on the end of the wrench/bar.

Id recommend doing whatever you gotta do now while you got it apart. I personally would and did apply red locktite to the thread before putting the nut back on (after thoroughly cleaning the thread of course) and am not super happy to be taking it apart so soon. Happy cause Im doing performance mods and the end result will be worth the effort, while the last time was repair/preventative maint. ,but still not happy about the effort.

I just finished cam chain replacement and adjuster.  There is NOT a folded washer on that nut.  Yours sounds tighter than mine was.  But I held the shaft from the opposite end (timing cover, 17mm bolt) while loosening the large nut clockwise.  Hope that helps.

Ha! I got that darn nut loose. I heated it with a torch just a little, and slid a 4' piece of pipe over the handle of the breaker bar for lavage and it came loose . Thanks.
