Title: New to forum, Exhaust wrap question, hot hot hot
Post by thanks4thefish42 on 01/18/10 at 19:24:44

Hi All, new S40 owner, actually my wifes choice. I stayed out of decision and she got it as it fit her small 100lb frame the best, even over 250's...I ordered Wingerline crash bars and change the oil, plug, cleaned the carbs and new plug. set the valves. Only 2000 miles on this white 05. I rode it home 100 miles the from the seller on a full moon night in North Florida and had a very nice ride despite the crudded up carbs. I want to wrap the exhaust to keep from getting burned on it. Has any one here done this? I searched the archives.

Best,
Capt Tedd

been done. Not too difficult. Choose an end to start on (people will claim starting at the head end will result in a better looking tighter wrap. They will also claim starting on the muffer end will do the same thing), clamp it, keep the wrap wetted with a spray bottle, or soak it in a bucket and pull tight and wrap as you go. clamp it at the finished end. It stinks until it cures and any time it gets rained on.

Howdy Cap'n, welcome aboard.

If you don't intend to take it off... ever, go ahead, but it'll blue the pipe.
Also, when it gets wet, it'll smell.  But there's a water proof spray that'll help.

I wear hightop boots (Tony Lama's) and have never even warmed an ankle, let alone gotten burned.

Hi Capt Tedd and welcome.

I just wrapped my header this afternoon.  It was easy. This was my procedure:

1.  Remove header from bike.
2.  Clean pipe well.
3.  Clamp pipe in vise.
4.  I dropped the roll of wrap into a bucket of water an removed it immediately.   It was plenty wet.
5.  I started wrapping from the muffler side.  Keeping the header in a vise helped me get it nice and tight.
6.  I folded under the cut end before using steel zip ties to secure the end.  Folding it under gave me a cleaner looking edge.
7.  Reinstall the wrapped header and run the bike till the wrap is dry.
8.  Removed the header and sprayed it down with a generous amount of high temp silicon paint to seal the wrap.  It also improved the appearance drastically.
9.  Reinstalled and ran it for about 15 minutes to cure the paint. As per directions on the can.

Wear gloves. There is fiberglass in most header wrap.  (humm... I got my present and past tenses all mixed up in that list.  Oh well you get the idea :-?)

It did not smell or smoke nearly as bad as I thought it was going to.  I think it was Rocco that said it smelled like burnt poptarts. :) It does.

The silicon paint made it that dark.  The wrap itself was a dingy charcoal color.  I am hoping sealing with the paint handles some of the rain smell.  If it does discolor again I can easily hit it with more paint.  ;)

The paint is made by DEI and is black.  You can use it on any part that gets hot.  Its good up to 1500 degrees.  I think they make a few different colors.

I rode in the rain for the first time with the wrap this afternoon and the paint did a good job of keeping it sealed up.  Almost no smoke or smell and it was just wrapped yesterday  8-)
