Title: Where did you ride today?
Post by kimchris1 on 01/09/10 at 19:17:39

Okay so some of you aren't as able to ride as myself right now. I just thought it might be a great topic to get going for the new year.

I took my S-40 whom I named Genie out today for about  1 1/2 hr ride. I took back roads and did a little freeway riding to get to another back road. Was 50 degrees here today. Sun shinning and I just could not passup the chance to ride. I am planning on riding again tomorrow as sun is supposed to last all day.
Met a few other bikes on the road as well.

Babyhog, I took you along in spirit...  :)

I caught up on some sleep today... had a rough week at work...  Appreciate Kim taking me with her in spirit!  Does riding hubby this morning count?

Been watching the weather we might get lucky Thursday and get in a quick ride, supposed to get close to 50, I think.

hey babyhog, guess I really didn't specify exactly what kind of riding.. hahaha..

Well at least you got in some exercise along with your ride..haha..

Okay gang I am referring to your motorcycle as if you all didn't know..

A great bunch we have here and thanks for allowing me to be a part of it..

Don't worry I have had to wait out the weather here as well.
For those of who that have snow and ice now, be careful of the sand on the roads as well...  ;)

Took a shower this morning and went to church....  hair froze.... eyes started to water from the biting cold (15).

No riding for a while.  It's suppose to get to 40 on Thrusday, but that means the snow will melt and make nice puddles hiding the cinders on the roads......  :-[

verslagen1 & kimchris1..... from the east side of the continent,  we envy you..... maybe a little grumbling when we read your posts too.   ;)

Just got back from riding to the store to get a twenty pound bag of ice. I think I need to adjust my idle. She died on me a couple of times at a stop light.

Also I almost got hit by an eighteen wheeler that was pulling out of an alley.

Yonuh, nice to hear you got out on your bike. I was happy to hear the Semi missed you.  Whew those close calls sure brings the heart rate up..

Today I rode again over to Tacoma and Fife Wa. That is over by Seattle yet not in Seattle.
Met a couple friends for some coffee. Had a nice time catching up with one another before we parted ways and all headed back home.
It was cool yet no rain and I was glad I had layers on.
All in all I got to ride for about 2.5 hrs and loved every min of it. O and took Babyhog along in Spirit too.. She is a great spirit.. hahaha

rode to work today about a 26 mile one way trip, gotta go back in the cold tonight though, hopefully my cheapo walmart track pants will keep the wind at bay and my long johns keep my tushy from freezing on the way home right now it's not looking bad though at around 50 degrees

Well she sleeping till spring did not want to get her up you know how long they take to get ready  to go someplace, then I have her lisen to her complain its to cold the road has snow on it etc. so I will let her sleep till spring then get her up wash, oil change, maybe buy her somthing new, then take her for a nice ride. I take good care of her and she keeps going. WHY DO WE CALL THEM BY THE FEMALE GENDER?

Title: Re: Where did you ride today?
Post by kimchris1 on 01/14/10 at 08:02:07

in answer to why do we call our bikes female gender names? Is due to it takes awhile to warm (her) up. Then be ready for a ride that will make you forget all the bikes you rode before her... hahahah

Actually I named my bike after my Dad. His name was Gene and he would have been so proud of me for attaining my endorsement and achieving many goals as well. So that is how I came to call my bike Genie..  ;D

Really.  Cars, bikes, boats.. all personified and female.  It's either a plot to make us feel guilty for "dumping" them for a better one, or a cutesy-annoyance similar to THE CLOCK.  "Yeah, she's only got 3000 miles on THE CLOCK."  An odometer measures distance not time, durr.

Men always think women are plotting to make them feel guilty over anything.  Why is that?  Are you feeling guilty about something?
I like Kim's explanation better, but I always just figured it was because men name their "toys" more than women do, and figured it sounds less gay to give them female names...  Wouldn't you look at him funny if Bubba went to get on his bike and said "well, I'm gonna go take Bob for a spin!" ??

Her "bike" is running fine and no seafoam is required.  She says it's a changing body (i.e. menopause) thing.  She just doesn't crave the "ride" like she used to.

Wow, that's amazing.  I wouldn't last 5 minutes at 26F.   If you are at work now, at least your ride home should be substantially better!

Nah, the "plot" thing was more of a joke.  I don't think women are behind it.  Men tend to propagate the "her" thing most, perhaps to convey that the thing means as much to them as a woman, or that they treat the thing as well as they'd treat a girlfriend or wife.  Guys take a lot of pride in working on their cars/bikes/boats.. maybe the plot is by men to make other men feel guilty for not maintaining their stuff as well as they do.

Quote:
Are you feeling guilty about something?

Possibly.. for screwing around on the internet instead of working.  Bike-wise, I'm guilty of having too many.. it's a harem!  For shame.  :-[

That's a good explanation. And women who give pet names to their things don't gender-bias to female as much as men do.  Personally the whole thing creeps me out.  I wince at my mother-in-law calling her car "Cecelia" especially now that she's about to dump it (possibly on me) because it's run into the ground after years of neglect.  It just seems totally inconsistent to name something like you would a pet, then treat it like a disposable appliance.

To lunch and then to Wally world in the sidecar rig. Was comfortable before moving but left the jacket liner at home. Got a long sleeved shirt at Wally's place for the trip home. Probably in the lower 70's here south of Phoenix AZ !! First time out since last Fall so the fuel is a little sputtery yet, but a couple hundred miles will fix that. Will work on that daily. Max

We drove he sidecar rig across the lower Phoenix area to Chandler to see were the new oncologist office is for the appointment tomorrow. Little over and hour going and a hour coming home. Have now run the old fuel out of the tank that was in it last summer when we stopped riding it it. I used the new Sta-Bil Marine version and I recommend it as it is formulated for the alcohol fuel additive we are all dealing with. A predicted heavy rain storm chased us home but we beat the rain. I'm sure there will be some low land flooding tonight as it was pouring when we went out to get a decorator table my wife bought that was to much to haul on the sidecar rig.

Took the bike out for a spin yesterday afternoon.  Already dark out, but still in the upper 40's, and the rain had let up long enough for the roads to dry out enough to not crud up my facemask with road spray.  Would've left the house earlier, but with my work shift, I don't wake up 'til early afternoon, even on my days off. ;D  Rode around town, and down into Portland, looking for a hardware store that was still open (didn't find any), to try out a brainwave I had for snazzier looking spacers for the front of my seat, instead of the nylon spacers that are too short anyway. :P  It was such a nice ride, I prolonged it by taking a lap on the back roads around my house, and a spin through the rich peoples country, of course being considerate not to open the pipes up (yeah right! ::)).

Today I took myself and babyhog in spirit on a nice 27 mile roundtrip ride. We had a blast in the sunshine.
Babyhog almost got us pulled over by the stater with her snorting sounds. haha..

Seriously, it was absoulutely a fabulous sunny day here after some rain earlier this a.m. I waited till the afternoon and the roads were dry.

So far this has been one of the nicest January's in a very long time here. So I have to take advantage of it.

Was going to ride around town and pick up a few things this afternoon.  Looked a little like rain, so grabbed the waterproof jacket and hit the road.  By the time I got to the first stop it was drizzling, by the time I got ready to leave it was coming down pretty good.  So of course I broke the rain pants out of the saddlebag, and kept on riding! :D  I forgot that I actually don't mind riding in a little rain, and it's funny to see some of the looks you get. ;D  It wasn't quite as fun when the rain let up and I started getting cruddy road spray on the facemask, but it was worth it just to get it out of the garage. 8-)

This a.m. we have rain so will have to see how long it continues and if the sun comes out and dries the roads early.

... to work, argh.

Hey, I was passin' one of those 4 wheeled high mpg dohickies with a speedo that you could read from 2 lanes over.  So I pace it for a bit to check my speedo.  The little bugger was doin' 65 and I look down, way down and it says 60?!?!  Humph, all this time I've been thinkin' that since I started ridin' the '8802 that it didn't have the get up and go the '96 had, only doin' 82/83 on my test hill.  5mph slower than my '96.  Now it's dead nuts.

Today I took my first ride on the Savage since last May!  I rode a circuit around my college, came home and helped my roommate tear apart his Audi engine, rejetted my carb, and then took another lap.

I love my new hardtail but I really need to get the seat springs installed. I hit a pothole and I think my kidneys broke loose from their moorings!  :o

Here in Maine - just 2 hours south of the end of the Appalachian Trail, it was warm today and I did some roofwork. 32degrees.
There is some grass showing on the walkways but the snow is still 6 inches deep. The bike is in the barn and there is salt everywhere on the roads, and sand. Been thinking from what people say- the middle and southern portion of the country is getting colder weather (no global warming) while up here in Maine - the northern part of the country has warmer temps than normal (global warming). But when we talk to each other it is all messed up because we are experiencing opposite weather conditions. We haven't had snow in weeks and it has been warmer yet way to the south the temps are cold and it has been snowy. Topsy-turvy.

Hey Verslagen, send some sun this way too. Were having warm temps yet not that warm.
Seems our weather pattern have shifted to the East as again their getting hit with snow. Same as down South. Fla is colder then we are here in the upper States.

Nice to hear the ones of you that are able to get out are taking advantage of this.. :)

Hubby and I were able to take our bikes on about a 30 mile round trip today. We had gret riding weather after the day started off very foggy. Had a great early supper and rode back home. I am hoping the temps stay in the mid 50's all week like forecasted. I can ride to work a couple nights possilbly.. Piglet be ready I will be coming by to pick you up.............O and my new pink coat and boots match your pink snout..hahahha..

I finally got out yesterday (Mon) for 20 miles, first time in a month and 1/2. I thought 60 degrees was comfortable w/o dressing like an Eskimo, but I found it to be quite chilly yet. But it was great to get out on 2 wheels again. I just rode some back roads here in Dillard OR.
And the bike,....took a minute longer to get her fired, but,....once warmed up a bit, run like a house a fire :o. I am always impressed how good it runs, especially after the spacer mod.
And HP ?? When I cobb the throttle thru 3 rd & 4 th gear, my heart can thump too ! ;D

Broke into the low 60° range today (yesterday looking at my clock!), so took my baby into town, and topped off the tank, and went for a spin around town.  Stopped to visit a guy I used to work with for a while, and didn't get left until well after dark.  Not in the 60's anymore, brrr! :(  On the upside, I found someone willing to go riding with me so I can get used to having a passenger.  His daughter said she'd be more than happy to ride along, so we're going to look at helmets tomorrow (I've got a coupon! :D) at CycleGear.  I figure she'll be a good test subject, since despite being over 5' 5", she probably doesn't weigh over 90 lbs, so there's not a lot of weight there to throw me off.  Anyway, any suggestions from any of you seasoned 2-uppers on advice I can give her (aside from "lean as I lean!), and stuff I should know too? :-/

Good point, thanks for the advice.  I've already told her she doesn't want to be moving around much.  Plus she's almost literally a toothpick, so I guess if she does, hopefully it won't throw me off much.  I plan on starting out on the back roads I cut my riding teeth on, almost all 45 mph and lower, and little traffic, so pretty learner friendly.

Title: Re: Where did you ride today?

I have rode double many years, and if the passenger didn't act (move) as if they were part of the bike itself, (including lean when I lean) they didn't ride w/ me anymore,......and they still won't.
But I have found that most all passengers cooperate and adapt quite quickly.

Sorry Bill, but I agree with Routy. Riding with a passenger requires some degree of cooperation. Adding 90, 150, or 200 of weight to the back of the bike affects the handling and will require some assistance from the passenger. Best that I've found is to just have them tuck in close to you and then they tend to move the way that you do.

;D  Sorry to get a spat going in here.  The "tuck in close" is about the best sounding advice yet (partially because she's a cutie! :D), and makes sense.
Ok, everyone, back to your ride tales.  Just a jaunt around town today, nothing exciting.  Well, I should say nothing out of the ordinary, riding's always exciting! 8-)

So you would have trouble handling with a lot of weight in saddlebags, because the saddlebag wouldn't be assistancing you at all.

I'm not riding today, as I live in Minnesota and the bike's still in winter storage.

But on my drive home yesterday, I saw a scooter in the oncoming lane.  :o

This was a on a semi-major city street that had been cleaned of snow fairly well by the plows, and that, plus a sunny and above-freezing day yesterday meant the road was snow and ice free (but wet).

But residential streets here in St. Paul still have snow/ice on them, so it will be a while before I take my bike out (but maybe later this month, or early March, for sure).

The difference with the weight in the saddlebags is
1 - not many people carry over 100# in their saddlebags
2 - the saddlebags are lower than the seat (lower center of gravity), therefore they don't affect the handling as much as a person on the back (unless you are willing to put 100# in 1 side and nothing in the other!)

With that, I have nothing more to add.

Got called into work this morning and decided to use it as a reason to get a ride in. Jumped onto I 95 and ran the bike up to 80mph just to shake the dust off  ;). When I got to work the "problem" was a missing O ring on a pickup. Quick and easy fix and was back on the road in half an hour. Took the long and easy ride home, using all the back roads I could. Great way to start the weekend even if I had to go to work.

We had about a 120 mile ride. We rode with water as scenery for awhile and then thru part of the Olympia National Forest. The mountains are covered in snow and that is great. Keep the snow on them and not on me.. hahah..

So many bikes out my hand got a lil tired for all the waving. Seems everyone here that has a bike had it out yesterday.. YIPPEE Spring seems to be here afterall.... :) :) :)

It was 47F and sunny but windy in SE Connecticut yesterday afternoon. Took my daughter's Savage out for a spin to clear its throat from its winter sleep. Started on second thumbing of the ignition switch. Dodged melt water and salt patches. Clutch is still slipping, but will address that when it gets a little warmer. May take my Bandit out today.

Well, I thought I was gonna have a chance to ride yesterday.... finally a beautiful day!  Sunny and got up to about 50 in the afternoon.  Had gotten my bike back together, new rear signals, license plate frame, and re-upholstered seat back on.  But my mother called and said her hot water tank was leaking.....  soooooo.... we had to go get her a new one and install it.  I know, it shouldn't have taken all my riding time, but what happens when you are in a hurry... yea, nothing goes right.  Oh well, the roads are still a bit salty (although I was gonna at least ride into town anyway).  And I hope they fill some holes soon!

I have a meeting and some visits to make at the hospital in Greenville, about 35 miles one way.  It is supposed to be 65 today, but it is starting out well below that, 36 right now.  I know that is far from what others experience.  I can put on enough clothes to keep warm.

I did the cam chain and tensioner last week and took a couple of rides around here.  With the eastern NC weather getting right (maybe 70 later in the week) I am ready to park the truck and get back on the bike.

I went out for a little ride yesterday. 1st time this year. It was about 55 degrees and the roads are dry. The only problem is all the sand on the road. I dealt with that okay. I took a ride to my mom's camp to check out any storm damage from the winter and found most of the beach washed away. There is a little brook that runs along side the building and overflowed its banks and took most of the beach with it. So I guess I'll be spending next weekend with a shovel and wheelbarrow trying to get the sand back where it belongs before they close the dam(they drop the water level in the lake every winter). Oh well, it gives me something to do.

Like for AL, it was about 55 or so here yesterday, cold in the morning, so we waited until afternoon to venture out, but YAAAYYYYYY, first ride of 2010 is done!  It was brisk, but sunny, so we didn't put on the chaps.  Tops of my thighs were the only thing that got a little cold, and chaps would have solved that.  Only rode about 30 miles, stopped for a bite to eat and just took a leasurely ride, just to be riding!  It rained last night, so hopefully that will wash more of the grit off the road!!  Today is supposed to be nice and tomorrow is predicted over 70°.  Dodging the potholes was easier than I expected.  Can hardly miss them in the cage, but piglet did great!

Well, it kissed 70 degrees today and I put both the bikes out on the road for short store trips.

Spent time putting air in tires, and fiddling with them a bit making sure they are ready for the real season which will start in a few weeks.  Amazing how much air you lose in a front tire over the winter time.

Tomorrow it hits 70-75 degrees with lows in the mid thirties for the rest of the week.

Cherry trees have busted out in glorious white blossoms, daffodils are up and making heads, robins are out pulling up worms, grass is showing green on the roadsides, red bud trees are shagging out some little green leaves.

Pre-spring in the south in other words.

Jest enough of the good stuff to get your spring fever cranked up really good for when the next sleet & ice storm hits us and puts us back into nasty old winter time.

Hey, I didn't get sick at all this past winter !!!

Amazing !!
