Title: Custom header
Post by verslagen1 on 12/30/09 at 13:24:09

My brothers friend has a pipe bender.
I'm going to try to fab up a header and straight pipe.
Aiming at 1.5" OD and header wrap.

Anybody know where I can get the ring for the flange?

Anybody know what baffles will work well?

You could us a 1.5" steel washer spot weld it on, then grind it down to your outside diameter. Hope this helps. Harry

I hate the stock flange,... I want a finned one like this...

I thought about measuring, and going junkyard hunting...
I've also toyed with the idea of an upswept left-side exhaust... wrapping around the front downtube and back along the belt...
That'll never happed either... :-?
If I was Versy,.... it would... ;)

Does anyone remember a 'baffle' called a "Snuff or Not". Looked like a washer with a stem on it, like a lolli-pop. They wre spring loaded with a square washer that had the corners bent down against the pipe & a knob so you could turn it. We used vacuum cleaner pipes for our straight pipes with one or two "Snuff or Not"s'  in them. Could go form loud to quiet just by turning the knob. Great for slipping into your neighborhood without getting noise complaints. 8-)

I built and installed three of them one, lasted a whole weekend! They all blew out on I-17  once I hit 70+. I guess that I am not as good a welder as I thought?

in the OPEN mode still has restriction, larger dia pipe with same set up wouldnt BLOW..gotta do the math but I aint D 1 that knows the forumla...

The ones we used were stamped from one piece of steel, no welds. And turned sideways they offer very little restriction.  8-)

The ID on a stock header is pretty small. Like 1 & 1/8th or so.

1.5" i.d. would be good and a match for one of Lancer's mikuni VM38's.

I seem to recall from earlier discussions on here someone opined that putting too large of a pipe (just the outer shell of the stock header say) would be counterproductive to exhaust velocity and that putting cone shaped insert after the port would increase velocity, maintain backpressure and prevent backflow.

After that, the ID of my screaming eagle muffler is 1 5/8, so 1 1/2 would be just right to match that.

Too bad exhaust systems aren't that simple. The problem is only slightly related to "back pressure." The math that most closely resembles the math of exhaust systems is just about the same as the math that describes radio frequency transmission lines. The pulses that reflect back and forth in the exhaust system end up resembling standing waves in transmission lines. If the engine ran at a nearly constant speed - as a transmitter operates at a nearly constant frequency - it would be much easier. Those resonances in the exhaust explain very neatly the phenomenon of an engine "coming onto the pipe." The intake system is also resonant, and is often tuned to a different resonance than the exhaust to "smooth out" the engine's torque curve. Racing engineers go to great lengths to get intake and exhaust resonances at the same place. The benefit is quite high torque and power, at the cost of a very narrow torque band.

If minimum back pressure were the only goal, you need look no further than the exhaust stubs on the WWII Spitfire. The pipe was only just long enough to get from the exhaust port to the outside air. The absolute minimum back pressure would likely happen by simply removing the exhaust altogether.

Truck,

What size pipe is that that you used?  (great looking pipe by the way)

That's to back fill the weld with inert gases to prevent corrosion and embrittlement.

Well I'm impressed that looks awesome. I only wish we didn't have the right cover that was shaped around the exhaust.

I plan on changing that boring looking cover. and incorporating an oil cooler in there somewhere.

Besides the beautiful exhaust on the bike did you notice it also has a mono-shock suspension fabricated. Definitely some quality work. Max

V, if you're talking about the flange that I think you're talking about, I got two in my garage.  The M50 flanges are identical to the S40.  You can have 'em free if that's what you need.

I'll keep yours in mind, right now we're checking into what's available straight from the mill and part them off ourselves.
