Title: Wet Header Wrap
Post by wolfmrp on 12/13/09 at 10:24:27

I just install my SupperTrapp and the bike sounds great!
I am thinking about wrapping the header, but I read somewhere that it will smell every time the pipe gets wet.  I live in Portland Or and it rains a lot here.  I was wandering is anyone has had and first hand experience they could share on this subject.

When the wrap is first done it will smell for a little while but it does not take long to cure, wet or not.  After 10-15 hours of riding time it is pretty much done.  I suppose you could mix in some herbal smell-good stuff if you wished...maybe some cinnamin or vanilla or mocha ? ?  whatever....  just ride it; catch some rain or spray it down if you want and ride some more.  It will stop smelling in a little while.

Nobody's responding?....  Humph!...

Several members here have wrapped pipes...
From what they've said,...  They do get a smell when wet... one described as a burnt pop tart...
he may have been eating  a PBJ during install...
They will also cause your pipe to blue very fast, and if you ride in wet a lot, rust...
But, if that look is da'bomb, you'll get some experienced advice on, How-to, here...      eventually...

I don't understand where everybody is today,... can't be riding...
it's too cold out there...

(EDIT)...
and now Lancer beat me to the response,... just 'cause I said that... Look at my post time,... I started first!  I'm just a little slow...
Short bus'n'all........ :-?

Wrap it if you like it! Just don't breathe during any redlights for the first couple a days,  after that, the smell shouldn't be a problem. And if it turns blue so what, it's wrapped and nobody can see it! Unless you leave your bike out in the rain all the time, you'll be a long time dead before that pipe rusts through. My wrapped pipe and fishtail muffler gives it a whole different personality. Even if I had to replace the header pipe, I'd do it again.  :D

Yummy Pop tarts! :D

Thanks, I can put up with the smell for a few days.  I think I will go for it.

I wrapped mine and sprayed it with the black silicone paint.  It did smell a bit for about 50 miles, now no smell at all.  I don't ride in the rain much as I don't have a front fender and any road wet comes right up into your face.

PS:
I was out riding all afternoon yesterday - 86 and sunny here!   ;D

You need to wrap it really tight.  It is best if you can clamp the wrap onto something and hold the pipe in your hands as you turn it and keep a hard pull on it so the wrap is pulled and rolled very tightly.  As you progress you can temp clamp the wrap so that you can unroll more wrap and then resume turning the pipe with wrap.
Most wrap comes with some thin stainless "pull to tighten" ties, but I prefer the larger worm style clamps because they can be reused if needed.
