Title: Anyone doing a chain guard mod ?
Post by JohnBoy on 12/09/09 at 20:13:24

I have always felt that the Savage chain guard was one of the ugliest that I have seen. I notice that many of you remove them. We must have similar views.  However, a chain guard does have a place on a bike. I once had a chain snap, and wrap back over the bike with enough force to cut a groove through the gel coat on my helmet.
I found a solution that works for me. I removed the bottom guard, and I removed a bit of metal from the top guard. I used a cutoff wheel in a dremmel and a straight edge.
I used some 320 and 600 wet and dry sandpaper to give it a satin finish and to prep it for paint should I decide to go that way.
Now, what can I do with that Butt Ugly front pulley cover...hummm?

In the picture you can see the amount of chrome coming off. The stock pulley cover covers the front bolt hole

Before I up'n'chucked the entire thing,...  I trimmed the end claw off...  It always looked like too much to me...

I will be when I do the chain conversion  :)

Serowbot, I didn't even think about bobbing the rear end! That looks much better...thanks!

someone drilled the engine trim, maybe some holes on the guard would look good, too..

Here it is installed:

after seeing the picture that Serowbot posted, I bobbed the end of the chain (belt) guard like he did. I am still leaning toward a textured black paint.

and I need to change that pully cover

With the solo seat & all the "clean it up" work, dont the rear pegs really need to go & the hole plugged & painted?

That bobbed belt guard looks sweet!!

I agree, I like the bobbed look.  I think lightening holes would look good too.

It gives me some ideas, like I need any more.  I still have a half finished air cleaner cover, aluminun stock bent, just need to get the expanded metal mesh in.
the shame is I havent actually ridden but once in 2 months, busy on weekends, driving kids to school on weekdays.

I'm thinking about cutting the front pulley cover something like the above. and putting a black stainless mesh behind the cut out areas. I got do do something to try to balance those two slots out. Before I start chopping things up I would welcome your input. There is a lot of talent in this group.

Id expect that putting all those holes in it would make it pretty fragile. If you have room inside for a screen, you could open that up & JB weld a piece of Hardware Cloth inside. How were you planning on healing up the slots in the cover so you could drill it all out. Or were you planning on cutting it out & putting screen back there?

I like the look, a lot

I agree, it looks great!
I am thinking a circular patter playing off of the drive pulley,
or maybe a scallop pattern, (gonna scallop my fender and tank whne I get the other projects under control.

I copied  your belt guard mod thanks for the inspiration heres some pics.
Also I used a disc cutter I bought from lowes for 5 bux cheap mod that greatly improves the look of my bike!
