Title: Springer front end questions.
Post by Biddie on 11/29/09 at 21:03:49

I finally got enough money to put a springer front end on the Beast, but I'm not sure about how to go about getting one that fits. Do Harley ones fit the head tube? If so what length should I go? I know I don't want a +16 chopper, I am looking more for a bobber style. will our standard tire still fit or do I buy a whole other one? Any of y'all old timers got some experience with this? Also any  suggestions on color is appreciated. I'm thinking lime green and black; red/black; purple/black; or white/black.

Technically Yonuh's is a girder front end, but pretty similar.  And his particular model may have more rake than Biddie's looking for, if they're trying to stay close to stock.

As you can see from the instructions I posted, (I know, not very good instructions because I couldn't get any pics till after I had it all done) I went with a 7/8 neck stem, slight modification to the springer trees will allow you to use the stock Savage/S40 stem. The mods to the springer trees is only using a dremel tool with a sanding drum to carefully make the stem holes in the trees just a bit larger to fit the stock stem into place.

At least that is what I had to do for my girder. But remember also that the savage/s40 stem is fatter on the bottom than on the top. And keep your clymers or shop manual open next to you the entire time. I really do not recommend doing this mod without a clymers or shop manual to constantly refer to.

By the way, the bottom neck bearing is pressed on, so it can be slightly difficult to remove it. It depends on the width of the forks, on whether you can use the stock front wheel. Mine is pretty narrow so I had to go with a different wheel that uses a mini drum front brake.

Once the mod is done however you will no longer have to worry about fork seals or fork oil again unless you get the kind of springer with the shock to help lesson the pogo stick affect of rough roads.

I know you want to fit a springer bidde ...
But I'd like to make a case for a dirt bike FE like I have.
Among the advantages ... I'd say it is lighter and handles with less effort than stock.
Here is my pics, and I am selling it as well.

I could make one for your forks wiht some dimensions ... but mine is 9 degree rake, 21 inch aluminum front wheel and runs like a top.
If you went to a honda FE, you can run a 23 inch wheel too, but tires are harder to find in 23.

Anyway whole package or triples only ... I can make or pull off mine and sell you.
Cool.
Srinath.
